This module is designed to educate and train all level staff working in decontamination departments across the country. To ensure they achieve and maintain best practice and high standard of sterilization.
Successful completion of this course will provide the tools to ensure:
- an efficient and effective decontamination of flexible endoscopes
- improved infection prevention control for both patients and staff
An inquiry based learning (IBL) approach will be used and supported throughout the delivery and students will be expected to integrate theory and practice. The flexible & distributive learning component of the delivery is supported by materials which have been authored in-house and will be supported by virtual learning environment (VLE). It is anticipated that this method of learning facilitates the development of transferable life long learning skills.
The module will cover preparation of yourself, and the environment, the endoscope decontamination process, transportation (packing), storage and traceability of medical devices. In addition, it will explore both local and national policies and regulations regarding Health and Safety in the workplace.
Outline Content
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Types of gloves - awareness to latex allergy.
- Eye protection and facial visors.
- Introduction to hand washing and infection control.
- Decontamination environment.
- Cleaning process.
- Disinfection process.
- Drying process.
- Sterilisation process.
- Packing/storage/traceability, and transportation.
- Health and Safety regulation.
- Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).
- Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR)
- Departmental policies and procedures regarding decontamination.
