Derrik Ferney is Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences, having previously worked at universities in the UK and in France. He has published extensively in the field of applied languages, producing reference works such as dictionaries, glossaries and terminological databases in both traditional and digital formats. His work has been published in ten countries and applied in a range of contexts including the management of cross-border emergencies by European emergency services.

He has also written on the learning and teaching of languages, particularly computer-aided language learning, multi-media instructional design, and institution-wide language programmes. He has co-edited a number of books for the UK's National Centre for Languages (CILT), was Chair of the Standing Conference of Heads of Modern Languages in Universities and served on the Advisory Board for the Higher Education Academy's Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies. He continues to teach language engineering on the MA in Intercultural Communication.
