ALSS student successes

Students in the Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences have been extremely busy recently, demonstrating the highly sought after skills and talent required to forge ahead in industry.

Anglia Law School students David Bannister and Ben Shepherd are making great progress in the National Student Mooting competition, following on from our unprecedented record of 6 national wins. They won the first round of this year's competition against London School of Economics, beat Greenwich in the second and are now preparing to face University of Hertfordshire. If successful, they will go on to compete against the University of Cambridge.

Birgitta Sif, one of the stars of this year's MA Children's Book Illustration graduation exhibition at Foyles Bookshop in London, is to sign a two-book deal with the top children's publisher Walker Books. Birgitta was offered multiple book deals by several other publishers but, after much thought, chose to go with Walker Books because of their reputation for the highest quality design and illustration.

BA (Hons) Interior Design student Georgiana Dobrican has been shortlisted for the Young interior Designer of the Year Award. This high profile, national competition for graduating interior designers has a cash prize of £10, 000 and a six month paid internship at the London or Manchester studio of Janine Stone. Janine Stone is one of the UK's most respected architecture and interior design groups with offices in the UK and Russia, employing a team of 50 talented individuals across all disciplines of the business. Entry is understandably competitive and the industry takes a keen interest in all shortlisted entrants giving them a real edge in the market. Pathway Leader Tim Kobin praised Georgiana's success: "This is an important achievement and really demonstrates Georgina's innovative design, clear process and developed communication skills."

Our BA (Hons) Film and TV Production students have been working with the NHS to produce the official campaign video for the Squash Stigma in Mental Health campaign. For young people with a mental illness, stigma and discrimination is one of the greatest barriers to a complete and satisfying life. The film, produced by Daniel Battersby, Linda Van-Wolferen and Clare Unsworth, focuses on how stigma can get in the way of friendship. The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust said: "We were really delighted with the quality of work produced by three talented Film and Television Production students for us... They enthusiastically approached the subject with great sensitivity and creativity. We hope to offer more placements to students in the future." The Trust also launched a regional competition to design the campaign logo and the winner turned out to be our MA Children's Book Illustration graduate Matthew Long (top picture).

Master of Fine Art student and BA (Hons) Fine Art graduate Amelia Poon is going from strength to strength. Following on from her success in having work accepted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Amelia's work has also been selected to be shown at the Assembly House Art Show 2011, Flying Colours: Fascinating Forms and has a six month contract to exhibit at the Gallery Rooms at Braintree Hospital.

Our film students have also been having great success at Watersprite, Cambridge's International student film festival. Ashley Cutmore, a graduate in BA (Hons) Film and TV Production, won the category of Best Cinematographer for his film Hush, directed by Henry Lockyer. In response Ashley said: "Receiving the award has given Henry and me a great push forward with our continued ambition of making great films." Also shortlisted were BA (Hons) Film Studies student Judith Handby in the Sound category and BA (Hons) Film and TV Production student Ozgur Karakaya in the Documentary category.

MA Publishing students are proving that the course lives up to its promises with two publishing students launching Cambridge-based independent publishing businesses. Safkhet Publishing, founded in 2010 by Kim Maya Sutton and William Banks Sutton, has recently signed Bruce Moore from Mechanicsville, Virginia, for the cook book For Those About To Cook. Beth Jones successfully launched the International Student Times earlier this year, a magazine for English Language learners in Cambridge. The IST was well received and, after winning the Cambridge University Press' Best Dissertation Award for its business plan, Beth can be confident that it has a promising future.
