Fair Tracing project chosen for Impact! exhibition

Dr Apurba Kundu is the Principle Investigator of "Fair Tracing", a 36-month £411,290 project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Completed in September 2009, the project investigated how to empower producers and consumers by using digital tracing technologies to provide enriched information about the roots of goods and services, and involved colleagues at the universities of Oxford, Sheffield Hallam, and Royal Holloway, London.

Fair Tracing has now been selected from among thousands of EPSRC grants to be included in the EPSRC 'Impact!' exhibition that will take place at the Royal College of Art, London from 16-21 March 2010.

EPSRC's Impact! campaign aims to communicate the impact that our research has on the world around us and show how engineering and the physical sciences are vital for our future.

As part of this Impact! campaign, EPSRC is working with the Royal College of Arts and NESTA (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts), to coordinate a mixed media exhibition of original design proposals which will explore the relationship between science and society. The exhibition will feature conceptual designs from any art medium, including videos, photographs, interactives, prototypes, system diagrams and illustrations.

16 EPSRC funded research teams have been paired with designers from the Royal College of Arts. The designers will be exploring the possible social, political, economic, cultural and ethical implications of the research, and translating them into design proposals.

Fair Tracing was chosen by Nicolas Myers, a French designer with degrees in graphic design and computer technology from UK and French institutions.

His work investigates the implications of digital technology through the filter of design. In a context where almost all physical objects, living organisms and phenomena are described in a digital manner his projects question the neutrality of these representations, while focusing on aesthetic and visual representations and interactive experiences.

Dr Kundu and the Fair Tracing team are holding a series a meetings with Myers and other projects and designers selected for the Impact! Exhibition and are eagerly waiting to see his final vision of their work.
