Helen Loth's research activity
Helen teaches music therapy theory and clinical skills, organises clinical placements and manages the Music Therapy Clinic. She has a special interest in multi-cultural improvisation and teaches Indonesian gamelan. Her clinical interests include music therapy in psychiatry, for people with eating disorders and for young children with learning disabilities and their families. She has also trained in psychodynamic counselling and works as a counsellor in primary care. Helen supervises undergraduate and MA dissertations in music therapy related fields.
Helen studied music at Dartington College of Arts, The Orff Institute, Salzburg, and trained in music therapy at the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education, London and Temple University, Philadelphia. She is a member of the Advisory Council for the Association of Professional Music Therapists. She has performed in the UK and internationally with the South Bank Gamelan Players, playing traditional and contemporary compositions for Gamelan.
Her current research is looking into the relevance of Indonesian gamelan music to music therapy practice.
