Gianna Bouchard's research activity page
Gianna teaches both theoretical and practical modules on the undergraduate Drama and Performing Arts courses and supervises undergraduate dissertations on contemporary theatre. Her main teaching areas are in performance studies and analysis, politics and performance, identity politics, dance theatre, live art, and devising performance. In 2009 Gianna received a Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Student Experience at Anglia Ruskin University and was shortlisted for a 'Made a Difference Award' in 2013. She is currently External Examiner for the University of Kent and the University of Wales, Newport, and is part of the strategic advisory committee for Pearson/Edexcel's redevelopment of the BTEC in Performing Arts, for launch in 2015.
Gianna's research focuses on the medicalised body in contemporary performance, exploring the interface between medical practice and discourse and performance practice. This has included interrogations of Renaissance anatomical dissection and current exhibitions, including 'Bodyworlds'. Her current work is on the concept of specimenhood in performance and she is currently developing a book proposal on this subject. In 2013-14 she will be co-editing a special issue of Performance Research journal, titled 'On Medicine', with artist and scholar Martin O'Brien. She is also co-founder of a new performance and medicine network, whose first meeting will be in July 2013, at Anglia Ruskin University. Her wider research interests include contemporary theatre and performance, experimental theatre, live art, interdisciplinary arts practice and critical theory.
