Sarah Whitfield is a dramaturg who has collaborated and advised on a range of projects from site-specific immersive theatre to West End musicals.

Her research uses a cultural materialist approach in revealing collaborative practices in music theatre, consequently challenging established historiographies; focusing particularly on the work of Kurt Weill. It opens the archival traces of Weill's musicals to fresh readings, and questions existing assumptions. It disputes the reliance on written texts over performance texts, placing each musical into the wider context of its conditions of production and reception. Broadly, it reveals the production process and sheer labour at work within the musical's collaborative production method.

In her emerging performing praxis works she explores differentiations between art and craft as creativity and labour, engaging with questions of sustainability and the memory of the everyday object, through lo-fi performance installations and encounters.

She has a PGCHE in Creative and Academic Practices in Higher Education, from University College Falmouth. Her PhD was completed at Queen Mary, University of London, and her MA at Goldsmiths College, University of London.

She is keen to supervise work in the following areas:

  • Contemporary music theatre
  • Theatre and performance histories (archive/repertoire)
  • Collaborative theatre practices
