An Investigation into the Perception of Music Therapy in a Service for Adults with Learning Disabilities- The Way Forward
Anna Jacobs, 2000
Abstract
This dissertation describes the processes undertaken to understand how Music Therapy is perceived within a service for adults with learning disabilities. It firstly looks at the current literature that states the benefits of Music Therapy within this client group. I describe some work I have done in more detail and how I might approach working with clients where long term therapy would not be the most effective way in which to meet their needs.
The main focus of this study is a questionnaire designed to gain some factual information about how Music Therapy is perceived by those making referrals to the service. I describe the process undergone in designing this questionnaire and its distribution amongst all potential referrers within the service. Having collated the results I make some analysis of the data obtained from the questionnaire. Once the questionnaire was complete the results were presented to those who participated in the survey and reactions to this presentation are also noted.
I conclude that Music Therapy is misperceived by a vast majority of people referring to the service and I discuss the implications this has on the service and where future training needs lie.
