The Application of Play in Music Therapy with Children with Special Needs
Vicki Kenny, 2001
Abstract
This dissertation analyses the application of play in music therapy. The author reviews the historical literature on play which includes its importance in the intellectual, social and psychological development of children. The author then discusses how play can be applied to music therapy with reference to the setting, instruments, and the relationship between the child and therapist. A comparison of play within the other arts therapies is also discussed. A detailed case study is then presented which describes the significance of peek-a-boo play with an autistic boy. Finally, the author discusses play in three different work settings and how this has helped to inform her skills as a music therapist.
