Can Improvised Music Describe what Cannot be put into Words? A Study of how Clients Use the Music Therapy Relationship to Express Aspects of their Inner Experience. A Psychoanalytically Informed Approach to Working with Adults with Learning Disabilities.
Hayley Hind, 2000
Abstract
This dissertation discusses the particular meanings and significance which improvised music can have within the therapeutic encounter. It briefly outlines what is meant by the term 'learning disability', and describes a psychoanalytically informed approach to both musical and non-musical material brought to a session. In the two clinical chapters, the music is considered in terms of the therapeutic relationship. It questions the possible meaning of the music within this context, and how it pertains to the ongoing therapeutic process. Specific musical examples are considered in terms of making connections with others, and discussed as to whether they enabled people with learning disabilities to find new ways of relating. In conclusion, it considers the current debate within the music therapy professions as to how improvised music relates to the client/therapists' relationship.
