Composition

There is a rich and diverse research culture in composition, demonstrating innovative work in many different genres including electronic and electro-acoustic composition, interactivity in electronic music, and music for film and TV. In addition there is a strong tradition of composition in collaboration with writers, which combines and includes elements of improvisation, using a range of generated techniques to accompany and enhance the spoken word. The Department includes pioneers in the field of music technology, working in the areas of sonic art, sound installation and algorithmic composition. Researchers also specialise in the integration of contemporary compositional techniques with influences from different cultures (for example, Japanese Gagaku and South American folk musics).
