Music Therapy Clinic

The Cambridge Music Therapy Clinic

The Cambridge Music Therapy Clinic is situated within the Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge Campus. It was opened in Autumn 2005 in conjunction with the Music Therapy Department at the University and the Music Therapy Appeal. It provides a purpose-designed modern and safe therapy environment in an accessible city centre location, convenient for public transport, park and ride services and car parks.

The Clinic has three main functions:

Music Therapy Practice

The clinic has two therapy rooms suitable for group and individual work which are fully equipped with high quality musical instruments and recording equipment.

Music therapy can be provided for private individuals, local groups, voluntary organisations and charities, in addition to statutory health, education and social services. The Clinic Co-ordinator can work with organisations wishing to develop joint projects which can be undertaken in the clinic.

A register of qualified music therapists available for private work is held by the Clinic Co-ordinator, who can facilitate interested parties in finding a suitable therapist.

Teaching

The clinic is linked to the Music Therapy MA training programme. Students may be available to undertake supervised music therapy work for private individuals or organisations, as part of their training. The Clinic will also be used for students to observe clinical work run by the core teaching team. It is available for teaching for part of the week and teaching can be observed by national and international music therapists, and other appropriate clinicians and teachers, by arrangement.

Research

The Music Therapy Team at Anglia Ruskin University has an established international research profile. Research facilities such as recording and editing equipment, an observation booth, video analysis computer programmes and research literature are provided within the Clinic, in addition to a dedicated Resources room for the use of researchers. The team is committed to enabling research into all aspects of music therapy and to the development of this aspect of the clinic into a Centre of Excellence. Research Degrees in Music Therapy can be undertaken at the University.

Fundraising

The Anglia Ruskin Music Therapy Appeal raises funds for the clinic to support those who cannot afford to pay for treatment and to buy specialised equipment and instruments. It also helps support those training to be music therapists with small grants.
