Accommodation and Resources
The Department of Music and Performing Arts occupies purpose-built accommodation within the Cambridge Campus housing an extensive array of teaching accommodation, dedicated music and drama facilities, orchestral and ethnic instruments and other learning resources. The campus is situated very near to the centre of Cambridge and has onsite accommodation, library and computing facilities and a fully-fitted theatre.
Music and Performing Arts accommodation includes:
- Specialist teaching accommodation including lecture rooms, which can also be used for rehearsing
- A large recital hall housing a full range of orchestral percussion
- Twelve practice rooms each equipped with upright or grand pianos
- The Mumford Theatre - a fully-equipped theatre with large orchestral pit capable of housing full-scale operatic productions
- Two dedicated and fully-equipped drama studios
- An industry standard TV Studio
- An extensive suite of Computer Music Studios including a recording studio, digital editing studio and workstation laboratory
- A fully-equipped Music Therapy Clinic
- Five grand pianos, including a new Steinway Model D
- Two harpsichords
- A range of orchestral instruments including alto flutes, two cors anglais, an oboe d'amore, Eb, alto and bass clarinets, a contra bassoon and a bass saxophone
- A selection of Baroque and Renaissance instruments including a consort of crumhorns, cornetts and natural trumpets and a consort of recorders
- A range of traditional instruments from India (including two sitars), China (including a Chinese zither) and Africa (including a set of Ghanaian drums)
- A Balinese gamelan
The University Library
In addition to a wide range of books and periodicals, the library houses an extensive collection of music scores including several complete editions, a large selection of complete orchestral parts, CD and DVD recordings and a historic collection of some 3,000 33 and 78 rpm records (housed in the Music Department). The library also has a full range of audio-visual equipment and computing and research facilities. More information can be found on the University Library homepage.
