Metodi Yurukov recently took part in a national mooting competition, and provided us with the following report of his experience:

"Every year Anglia Ruskin University takes part in national mooting competitions and in December 2011, I took on the role of senior counsel for the claimant.

"In this round, we had to argue a fundamental contract issue related to the power of a signature. Our client had signed a document, which had not been read by her, and her decision had been further influenced by her sister. For the preparation of the arguments, we formed a team of three. For my part I had to find the top three most relevant and authoritative cases, allowing me to argue my point: that the signature did not have the same power as it would in a situation without the misrepresentation and the influence of her sister. Further to this, I had to distinguish the cases applied in the trial judgement as being irrelevant, as the trial judge had been misdirected.

"As this was a competitive commitment, we had to comply with rules and deadlines to present our skeleton arguments in good time. As we were the home team, we had to ensure that the University's Mock Court Room would be available and that matters were well-organised for the occasion. We were also responsible for finding a judge. For this round it was Bruce Lawrence, a barrister from Fenners Chambers.

"This commitment was a very intense experience for me. At the same time, I was actively involved with the Allen & Overy Business Challenge and I also had to ensure that my course work was being managed - the competition took place at the same time as our hand-in period, so we were all under huge pressure. My skills in time management were dramatically developed!

"Anglia Ruskin University has provided me with the resources and support that has allowed me to reach my potential. In particular the various extra-curricular activities such as this have been very helpful in preparing me to find employment."
