Advocacy and mooting workshops

Chelmsford Law students preparing to make applications to the Bench
During Semester 2 2011-12, a series of advocacy and mooting workshops were run in the Chelmsford courtroom every Friday morning by Senior Lecturer Kathy McMahon. These were open to Law students from all years to attend on a voluntary basis, and more than 20 students have taken part since they began.

Kathy threw the students in at the deep end, asking them to carry out all the relevant research and preparation necessary in order to make bail applications to the bench. The standard of advocacy was very good, with some very persuasive arguments being put forward. The sessions continued after the Easter break, covering a number of areas including examination in chief and cross-examination of witnesses. The group also took part in a mock criminal trial.

The aim of the workshops is to eventually form a mooting team to compete against other universities. However, the workshops are also intended for those who wish to learn the skill of advocacy.

Kathy would like to thank all of the students who gave up their time to attend, taking on even more work.
