CSET Summer School 2008
Vicky Armstrong started the LLB at Anglia Ruskin in September 2007. This summer she won a place on the CSET summer school along with fellow Anglia students Dominique Baptiste, Caz Thomas, Trudy Stanford, and Rachael Fleet. Here is Vicky's report on her summer school experience.
"The CSET Summer School was a one week, intensive course held at Imperial College London. It was geared towards students who attend non Russell Group Universities across the country, and introduces them to the City legal profession. There were over 900 applicants with only 104 students gaining a place. Five students from Anglia Ruskin attended the event; four from the Cambridge campus and one from Chelmsford.
"The week involved being part of a fictional case study, which covered a commercial transaction, intellectual property rights, employment issues, competition law and much more. There were also debating competitions, public speaking, mock employment tribunals, and visits to the firms - not to mention the many networking opportunities with representatives from the 21 law firms involved in the event, four of which were part of the Magic Circle. There were also talks from Peter Martyr CEO of Norton Rose, Graham Virgo who lectures at Cambridge University and Claire Montgomery QC from Matrix Chambers, all of whom offered inspiring, honest and motivational advice. The week ended with a graduation dinner at The Law Society. There will be a further two more events held for the CSET class of 2008, one of which will be held by Clifford Chance in November.
"The whole week motivated me and allowed me to feel positive about my future career, whether that be in a city law firm, a high street firm or in any career I may choose, as the event offered me transferable and practical skills, along with the self-belief of what can be achieved despite the Oxbridge perception!"
