We are delighted to announce that Dr Rohan McWilliam has been appointed Professor of Modern British History.

Professorial designation recognises Rohan's international eminence in the field of Victorian culture and politics. His books include Popular Politics in Nineteenth-Century England and The Tichborne Claimant: A Victorian Sensation. He is a currently at work on a social history of the West End of London since 1800, and his article about the actress Elsa Lanchester and bohemian London in the 1920s is due for publication next year. Rohan is also at work on a project about the theatre director and polymath, Jonathan Miller.

In 2012, Rohan was made President of the British Association of Victorian Studies (BAVS), the leading organisation of scholars devoted to the study of nineteenth-century Britain. This rewarded his role in promoting interdisciplinary discussion. Rohan also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Victorian Culture, where he is the Reviews Editor, and of the series 'Becoming Modern: New Nineteenth Century Studies' published by the University Press of New England.

Professorial designation also recognises Rohan's contribution to teaching, curriculum management and the cultural life of the Faculty of Arts, Law & Social Sciences. For most of the last decade he has acted as Course Leader for History. He has taught British and American history whilst, at various times, serving as Admissions Officer and International Exchange co-ordinator for History. He is also co-organiser (with Dr Jonathan Davis) of the Labour History Research Unit, which has developed books and conferences about the history of the Left both in Britain and around the world.
