The Global Crisis: What is to be done?
Date: Thursday 20 November
Time: 17.00 - 19.00
Venue: Helmore 251
All welcome.
What caused the financial crisis? Has a new Cold War broken out? What can we expect from the Obama Presidency?
The global economic system is on the brink of collapse and many countries including Britain are moving into recession. The events of the last few months will shape our lives into the foreseeable future. The election of Barack Obama in the United States has been greeted with enthusiasm in many countries but received a frosty response from Russia. How much change can we now expect? Are we on the brink of a slump comparable to the 1930s? Are we returning to the foreign policy of the 1970s? This symposium will provide an opportunity to discuss what is happening in the world.
Professor Stuart Wall (Business) will talk about the financial crisis. Dr Jonathan Davis (History) will talk about Russia and the West: A New Cold War? Dr Rohan McWilliam (History) will talk about the United States election and the Obama Presidency.
The event is an opportunity for students and staff to debate the most important issues of our time.
