History student curates exhibition for Duxford War Museum

BA (Hons) History student Josephine Bailey has updated an exhibition showcase for the War Museum at Duxford. Josephine was offered the opportunity to design the showcase, which is a permanent exhibition, through the department's ongoing links with the museum.

The exhibition is shown in the Airborne Assault room, which centres around the creation of a Parachute Regiment during the Second World War and the battles and campaigns they have been involved in since. The showcase itself focuses on the subject of army chaplains which suggested itself when active army chaplain, Reverend Major Anthony Feltham-White, member of the 2nd Parachute regiment, loaned his chaplain pack to the museum, having just returned from service in Afghanistan. His pack includes a bible, prayer books, altar cloth, silver chalice and plate for communion, wafers, oil, wine, and a collapsible cross. The Reverend Major also supplied photos of him performing services in Afghanistan.

Josephine said of the experience:

"The feedback I have received from staff in the museum has been very positive, and photos of the exhibition were put on the Facebook website. It was a great experience to be so involved in a key part of museum work, and I'm very proud! One of the most important things I learned was just how much work goes into putting up an exhibition, even a small one. After choosing a topic and writing up about it you would think you're nearly done, but there's so much more to it including considerations such as the lighting to take into account, and making sure the writing on the back banner is a certain font and size to apply to museum guidelines."
