Tory Young's research activity


Tory teaches on Modernism and the City, Contemporary Fiction and Ways of Reading on the undergraduate degree, and Re-reading Modernism, Practising Postmodernism and Research Methods on the MA.

Her principal research interests are in contemporary fiction, modernism, especially Nancy Cunard, and Writing in the Disciplines and she has published in these areas. She is the author of Studying English Literature: A Practical Guide (Cambridge University Press, 2008) and The Hours by Michael Cunningham (London: Continuum, 2003). She is currently writing a monograph on Narrative and Intimacy in Contemporary Fiction.

With Laura Winkiel, she co-edits the 20-21st Century section of Literature Compass.

Tory has organised conferences in the past on Nancy Cunard (November 2001), Writing in the Disciplines (April 2002), and Postgraduate Futures (July 1999, 2000 and 2001). Papers from the 2010 conference on Jean Rhys co-organised with Jeannette Baxter (Anglia Ruskin University) and Anna Snaith (King's College, London) are to be published in a special edition of Women: A Cultural Review, 2012.

Tory is keen to supervise research in the areas of:
