Rob Toulson's research activity
Dr Rob Toulson is Director and full-time Research Fellow at the Cultures of The Digital Economy Research Institute (CoDE) at Anglia Ruskin University. Rob is responsible for developing research and innovation projects which cover cross-disciplinary topics; engaging science with culture and academia with industry. Previously Rob was Director of The Sound and Audio Engineering Research Group and also Pathway Leader for MSc Audio and Video Technology at the University.
Rob is a Chartered Engineer whose personal research is in electronics and audio/music technology. He holds a PhD in the field of digital acoustic analysis and a first degree in Mechanical Engineering from Loughborough University, as well as having a number of year's experience working as a software engineer in the electronics industry. Rob is involved in collaborative projects utilising ARM's novel embedded systems prototyping device known as the 'mbed'. This programmable device is aimed at allowing electronics to be more easily incorporated into no-engineering projects related to culture and art. He is also researching percussion instrument tuning and dynamic range (loudness) in commercial music, as well as related acoustics and audio DSP projects.
Rob is also an active musician, record producer and researcher in the field of music production, co-founder of Half-Ton Recording Studios, Cambridge, as well as a successful industry collaborator on a number of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships for Anglia Ruskin. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Pleasurize Music Foundation, founder of the Cambridge Audio Engineering Society Section and a member of the UK Music Producers Guild and the European Broadcasting Unit's PLOUD group. Rob has supervised one PhD to completion and he is currently first supervisor to two PhD students.
