Joss Hands' research activity
Joss Hands teaches on the BA Media Studies and leads the modules: Media and Politics, Media and Economy, and Media and Philosophy. He is supervising a number of PhD students covering subjects ranging from digital culture and publishing, political communication and governance, to the mediation of the occupy movement.
Joss's research engages the relationship between media, culture and politics. His recent work has explored the role of digital media in direct action, protest and activism, culminating in his book @ is For Activism: Dissent Resistance and Rebellion in a Digital Culture, published by Pluto Press in 2011. His previous research has explored the role of new media in formal democracy and governance as well as its cultural, economic and social impact. He has published in a number of journals such as Information, Communication and Society, Philosophy and Social Criticism and First Monday as well as writing commentary for publications such as Open Democracy, IPPR Journal, The New Left Project, and others.
He is a series editor for a new book series from Pluto Press, 'Digital Barricades: Interventions in Digital Culture and Politics', with new titles being announced in 2013. He is currently researching and writing on the politics, pragmatics, and cognition of collectivity in social media and the transformation and political economy of digital culture.
