Dr Nina Lübbren (art historian and acting Programme Leader of Communication, Film and Media) will give a lecture at the Fitzwilliam Museum in the context of the Festival of Ideas.

Visual analysis means looking at a painting (or a sculpture, magazine cover or any other visual objects) carefully and in detail. There is no such thing as the innocent eye. Do we take time to look at a work of art (as we do when watching a film), or do we take it in at one glance? Is there a rift between the form of a picture (shapes, colours, textures) and the meaning (iconography, symbolism, political and historical context)? These questions are at the heart of what art is all about, and they will be addressed in this slide lecture, using selected works of art from different centuries. It is hoped that afterwards you will go away, prepared to look at visual objects (paintings, photos, anything at all) with fresh and critical eyes!
