Local investment in publishing talent
A local publishing services company is looking ahead through the financial doom and gloom and investing in the future of aspiring publishers. Hart McLeod Ltd is another company involved in publishing who has taken an interest in Anglia Ruskin University's new MA in Publishing, offering their support by way of a bursary for students.
The bursary is available to the successful applicant enrolling on to the full-time programme at the Cambridge campus of Anglia Ruskin University in September 2009. In addition to the £1000 discount from fees and the prestige of being the Hart McLeod scholar, Hart McLeod offer a 3-4 week work placement opportunity to the successful candidate.
Graham Hart of Hart McLeod explained the company's wish to support new graduates or those wanting to progress their careers in the industry:
"Like any successful company, Hart McLeod recognises the value of forward thinking and investment in the future. Modern publishing is a fast-paced and quick-changing profession and publishers need to be able to keep pace with developments whilst also having a solid grounding in all the traditional skills areas of publishing. The course at Anglia Ruskin University teaches all these skills and we wanted to ensure that the right candidate would be able to benefit."
As well as being offered this year, the bursary will also be offered for 2 more students for the courses beginning in September 2010 and 2011.
The MA in Publishing has been developed in close consultation with the industry in order to meet its changing needs. The Advisory Board is made up of, amongst others, representatives from Cambridge University Press, Macmillan, Polity Press, Salt, and ProQuest to ensure that the MA is always current, attractive to potential employers, and provides 'real' work as the course progresses.
Samantha Rayner, Senior Lecturer in Publishing and the convenor for the MA, views these links as essential:
"We wanted to make sure that our course would really place our graduates ahead of the game. The contribution of our Advisory Board has been invaluable in giving us insight in to the real demands of the industry. As well as equipping our students with the skills and knowledge to meet these demands our contacts within the industry mean we are able help set up work placements, offering our students the opportunity to also gain experience which is often the hardest to come by."
If you are looking for a new challenge or change of career why not consider publishing? There are still places available to start in September 2009 but applicants need to hold an unconditional or conditional offer to be eligible for the bursary. The closing date for applications for the bursary is Friday 15th August.
