Capturing Magic

Film students from the Department of English, Communication, Film and Media have been collaborating with The Stained Glass Museum at Ely Cathedral to produce short films to capture the rare medieval technology that is still used today in the art of stained glass. The films chart all the stages of the process from the first grain of sand to a finished panel of stained glass.

Student Christopher Rons said of the project: 'We hope to capture this in a way that will educate and inspire anyone, especially younger people to take an active part in learning about the heritage of stained glass. With the rise in health and safety risks it is harder to produce lead for this purpose and with the fall in demand for stained glass it is a unique opportunity to produce a video that fully explains and documents this incredibly delicate procedure before it dies out.'

The students worked in conjunction with experienced producer/director Laurence Vuillamy FRSA and were themselves able to learn about their own art form, practical film making. The films will be used as part of the Museum's education programme with schools and shown within the Museum itself.
