English course opens Anglia Ruskin's first departmental library
Thanks to a grant from Anglia Ruskin Learning and Teaching, University Teaching Fellow Dr John Gardner, with the help of students Jenni Niemelainen and Sophie Phelps, has created the University's first departmental library.
Comprising around 2000 books, donated by staff, alumni, members of the public, and the University Library, the library will be open every Wednesday afternoon to anyone who is a member of the Literary Society, as well as students of English, Writing, and Drama.
Sophie and Jenni, experts on the holdings having selected, shelved and digitally catalogued the entire collection, will act as student librarians.
Sophie said of the project: "Being given the opportunity to be involved in the setting up of Anglia Ruskin's first departmental library was something that I considered to be both an honour and a challenge at the same time. The preservation of libraries and indeed material texts is something which I am extremely passionate about.
The library in Helmore 145 may be small, but as Anglia Ruskin's first departmental library it is of significant importance, representing both progress and preservation. As scholars of English we are extremely fortunate to have such a useful resource within our University, and everyone involved in the project is confident that it will prove to be invaluable both to students and Lecturers alike for many years to come."
The library can be accessed by any Anglia Ruskin student or staff member with a staff card between 14.00-16.00 every Wednesday. Books can be borrowed for up to two weeks.
For more information please contact Dr John Gardner, Principal Lecturer in English.
