Student success

Every year, our students and graduates earn great acclaim and prestigious accolades for their work at local, national and international level.

YCN Student Awards

Graduating BA (Hons) Illustration students Anna Betts and Dominic McKenzie were recognised as outstanding winners in the 2011 YCN Student Awards, with Dominic going on to scoop the 'Student of the Year' award. This hugely important national competition, organised by illustration and animation agency YCN, involves live briefs from a variety of household name clients, including 20th Century Fox, Sega and Marks & Spencer.

Student Awards

Macmillan Prize for Children's Picture Book Illustration

Cambridge School of Art students have an outstanding history of success in the Macmillan Prize for Children's Picture Book Illustration. 2012 was the third year running in which one of our students has won 1st prize. This time it was Irene Dickson-Bulleid, MA Children's Book Illustration, who took the £1,000 first prize, with second year part-time student Daisy Hirst winning the £500 prize for the Lara Jones Award. A further three MA students and two BA (Hons) Illustration students from Anglia Ruskin's Cambridge campus were selected in the Highly Commended category.

BA (Hons) Illustration
student Tim Parker won the Puffin Children's Prize at the Penguin Design Awards 2012, drawing praise from an illustrious panel of judges for his cover design for Grimm's Fairy Tales. MA Children's Book Illustration student Alison King was also named as a runner-up in the Penguin Adult Prize category.

Filofax Design Competition

In September 2012, BA (Hons) Illustration and Animation graduate Becky Mountain became the first ever winner of the Filofax Design Competition. Her winning design will appear on a new personal organiser in Spring 2013, and Becky has now embarked on a six-month internship with the company leading up to its release.

Cambridge School of Art also offers its own annual student prizes. Details can be found on our competitions page.

2 years after graduating with a BA (Hons) Graphic Design, Matt Power's contribution to a handheld version of the game LittleBigPlanet helped win his team at SCE Cambridge Studio (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) a BAFTA. The studio was nominated in 2 categories: 'Best Handheld' and 'Use of Online', going on to win in the former category. As sole Graphic Designer, Matt was responsible for designing everything from menu icons, motion graphics, logo and packfront - right down to the little stickers used throughout the game.

Alumni Success

Cambridge School of Art has produced some outstanding graduates over the years, including Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett, Spitting Image Creators Peter Fluck and Roger Law, and the illustrator Ronald Searle, creator of St Trinian's. Many more of our graduates go on to find great success within their chosen field.

Graduate Rod Hunt illustrated the hugely popular Where's Stig? for the BBC Top Gear production team, which enjoyed chart-topping success - including a listing as Book of the Week in Bookseller magazine, a No.1 slot in The Sunday Times bestsellers list, and No. 6 in the overall UK chart. Rod graduated from our BA (Hons) Illustration course before setting up his own business and working as a full-time illustrator ever since. He has served as the Chairman of the Association of Illustrators and is currently on the Board of Directors for ICON, The Illustration Conference.

MA Children's Book Illustration graduate Birgitta Sif recently appeared in a promotional video for her new book Oliver, (published by Walker Books, October 2012). The cameraman commissioned to shoot the film turned out to be another Cambridge School of Art graduate, Pedro Ribeiro, who studied on our MA Film and Television Production course.

David Doyle
was selected by the Royal Mail to design a stamp as part of its series to celebrate the 2012 Olympic Games. David, who completed his MA Children's Book Illustration in 2007, was handpicked from amongst a wide range of artists on the books of illustration agency The Artworks to design a stamp for the Paralympics.
