Tim Sidell's research activity

Personal website: www.timsidell.com

Tim graduated in Illustration at Kent Institute of Art & Design in 1997, having established a Fine Art practice through drawing, collage and mixed-media painting. Following art residencies and exhibitions, Tim's work subsequently evolved through multi-channel site-specific video installation and experimental film. In 2003 a short 16mm film-making course then established Tim's path to cinematography.

Tim's own work explores the seductive apparatus and context of cinema. Working optically with 16mm and 35mm film, he has evolved a unique technique of re-shooting his own material in order to manipulate speed and highlight the presence and material of the film apparatus. Tim has received Arts Council funding to complete his films and has incorporated such experimental techniques into his cinematography practice.

Tim has worked as cinematographer in drama, artist's film, music video, as well as commercial, corporate and viral productions since 2005. Tim's background in painting, photography and experimental film has evolved in to a very confident and individual visual sensibility within his cinematography. Coupled with his energy, commitment, technical proficiency and understanding of cinema, this experience underpins his ability to collaborate so successfully with directors, working with them again and again. While contributing rich visual storytelling within such diverse projects, Tim is incredibly passionate about telling stories that need to be told.

Tim is proficient in all film and digital formats (though particularly loves celluloid). Shot on RED, his first feature, F, has been recognised for its distinctive cinematography and, in 2009, Tim received a nomination for 'Best Cinematography' from FujiFilm for his work on Mustek Metra. His most recent feature, Storage24 (Universal), was shot on the ARRI Alexa with his own beautiful 80's Canon lenses. The film includes much of Tim's trademark handheld work (on occasion, with rollerskates) and atmospheric, painterly lighting.

Tim has worked as a lecturer for fourteen years; delivers seminars at the British Film Institute and undertakes freelance teaching in the field of cinematography.
