Mick Gowar has been connected with Anglia Ruskin University since 1971, when he was a student on the first CNAA BA course offered by the then Cambridgeshire College of Arts & Technology. Since then he has combined part-time teaching at the Cambridge School of Art with a successful career as an author and editor of children's books, storyteller and workshop leader.

Since 1980, he has written or edited more than 120 books for children and young people, many of them for major educational series such as OUP's 'Treetops' and the new 'Project X" reading scheme, and trade books for beginner readers such as Franklin Watts' "Leapfrog" and "Tadpole" series. He has visited schools, libraries, colleges and festivals throughout the UK and abroad to give readings, performances and lead workshops. He has also undertaken educational projects for, among others, the Philharmonia Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Sinfonia 21, and the Fitzwilliam Museum and Kettles Yard Gallery in Cambridge. He has taught courses in creative writing and children's literature at Anglia Ruskin University and the universities of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Northumbria.
