John studied theatre design at the Slade School of Fine Art.

He designed 'The Passion Plays', 'You Never Can Tell' and 'An O'Casey Trilogy' (The Drama Centre London, 1991-3), 'Cavalleria Rusticana' and 'Gianni Schicchi' (CUOS, 1992), 'Absolute Hell' (Webber Douglas Academy, 1993), 'Hansel and Gretel', 'Savitri', and 'L'Enfant et les Sortileges' (Curious Opera Group, 1996-9) and 'Alexander the Great' (Mytilene Festival, 1999).

He designed 'The Marriage of Figaro' and 'Falstaff' (Forward Opera, 2001/2), 'Il Matrimonio Segreto' (Les Azurailes Opera, 2003), the Royal Academy of Music 'Tableau', 2004, and 'Cendrillon' (RAM, 2005).

He was a founder member of 'Curious Opera Group'. In 2004 he directed schools' workshops and designed for 'Uncle Remus' (Curious Opera Group/Hackney Empire), and in 2005 for 'Artscape' for Curious Opera Group/Merton Music Foundation.

He has assisted David Fielding, Alison Chitty, John Napier, William Dudley and Charles Edwards at the English National Opera, the Royal Opera House, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, the New Israeli Opera and the West End.

John designed sets and costume for 'Die Fledermaus' for the J.D Wetherspoon's venue 'The Opera House', a Victorian music hall in Tunbridge Wells, in 2007, and in 2011, sets for the Anglia Opera productions of 'Dido and Aeneas' and 'Aeneas in Hell' (a UK premiere), in the Mumford Theatre, Cambridge.

John has been Course Leader and Senior Lecturer on the BA (Hons) Film, Television and Theatre Design course at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, since September 2007, delivering the core modules to all levels. The course includes collaborations with the Drama department - so he has supervised and production-managed 14 public co-productions in the Mumford Theatre - as well as collaborations with film-makers from the Film and Television Production course.

In addition, he has been an advisor to the Drama department at the Leys School, contributing to productions of 'Much Ado About Nothing', 'Cabaret', and 'Romeo and Juliet', and an external examiner at Wimbledon College of Art and Rose Bruford College.
