Mary Humphrey

MA Printmaking student picked from over 3,000 entrants for Aesthetica Art Prize exhibition

Mary Humphrey, graduate of our BA (Hons) Photography degree and currently studying for the MA Printmaking, is one of 8 artists shortlisted from over 3000 entrants to the prestigious Aesthetica Art Prize. Her work will now be displayed at a prestigious exhibition at York St. Mary's, running from 8 March to 28 April.

Mary's submission was taken from her photographic series 'Roma:Transilvania', which focuses on the modern lives of the Roma people and was produced as part her undergraduate major project.

The annual competition is run by Aesthetica Magazine, an internationally recognised art and culture publication, with a combined online and print audience of 140,000 worldwide. The aim of the prize is to showcase the work of emerging and contemporary artists worldwide to a larger audience - but this is the first year it has included an exhibition stage, ensuring even greater exposure for the shortlisted artists.

Previous finalists of the prize include Julia Vogl (who went on to win the Catlin Art Prize, was shortlisted for Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4's New Sensations Prize, and has exhibited at Zabludowicz Collection), Marcus Jansen (who featured in Absolut Vodka's artistic campaigns), and Bernat Millet, who was also shortlisted for the National Portrait Gallery's Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize.

Mary's submission was chosen by a panel of influential art figures and curators including Cherie Federico (Editor, Aesthetica Magazine), Laura Turner (Curator, York Art Gallery), Frances Guy (Head of Collection and Exhibitions, The Hepworth, Wakefield), Kate MccGwire (internationally renowned British Sculptor) and Neeta Madahar (acclaimed British photographer represented by the Purdy Hicks Gallery, London).

The exhibition will be open from 10am-4pm and admission is free, so please go along and give Mary your support. For more information on the exhibition please visit the York St. Mary's website or Aesthetica Magazine.

The winner will be announced at the Private View on March 7. We wish Mary all the best for both the exhibition and the final stage of the competition.
