Reader in Fine Art extends research output

David Ryan's video collaboration with Nicola Sani at the 2008 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival
David Ryan, Reader in Fine Art at Anglia Ruskin University, recently announced new pieces of activity from two distinct areas of his research.

The first is a chapter submitted for the new 'Ashgate Research Companion to Experimental Music' (Ashgate Academic Press September 2009). In this, David explores the relationships between experimental music and the visual arts, looking at key figures such as John Cage and Christian Wolff together with recent practitioners such as Christian Marclay, Bruce Nuamann, Tacita Dean and others. 'We have Eyes as Well as Ears' broaches the subject of experimental music in galleries and the role of art school education in fostering experimental practices since the early 1960s, as well as approaches to sound, space and interdisciplinarity.

David will also be talking at the Symposium and book launch La Peinture Est Presque Abstraite at the Institut Français in London on Wednesday 18th November 2009, from 2-5pm. Along with other critics and artists from Britain and France, he will be discussing issues around the central topic: 'Can the medium 'painting' retain its identity in painting whilst acknowledging the impure mixing of sources, influences and techniques that are prevalent in today's supposedly post-medium age?'
