Porto 2009 Illustration Trip

Week two of the new taught year saw students and staff from Level 2 BA Illustration and BA Illustration and Animation degree courses heading off to Porto for their annual overseas drawing trip.

During what is becoming one of the highlights of their studies, students and staff spend an intensive and exhausting week exploring and documenting this fascinating city through observational drawing and sketchbook work. Building international links, trip organiser Chris Draper gave a talk to visual communications students at the prestigious Faculdade de Belas Artes at the University of Porto. Portuguese students were excited to see examples of our students' work, and several took up the invitation to join our evening crits back at the hotel, where they had a chance to talk to students in more depth and to discuss courses.

We are looking into possible Erasmus links and an exhibition of the students' work in Porto. Highlights included trips to the decaying Bolhao vegetable market and visits to the Calem and Sandeman port lodges, where we were made very welcome.

Our thanks to the Sky trust and Posers/Friends of Cambridge School of Art for their generous support, which keeps the cost of this valuable trip down and within students' reach. Many thanks also go to the staff team, Jim Butler, John holder and Hannah Webb for their invaluable help in making the trip such a success. We hope to have an exhibition of the work at Ruskin Gallery in the near future.
