Art and storytelling taster day
Dr Mick Gowar retold the story of King Herla
On 1 October, Year 10 and 11 Art and Graphic Design students from Thomas Deacon Academy, Peterborough, spent a day on campus taking part in an art and storytelling event organised by the External Liaison team. The day started with Art Lecturer Dr Mick Gowar retelling the legendary story of King Herla and his mysterious encounter with the Faerie kingdom. The students listened to the story and then had to create scripts and artwork, with the help of BA Illustration students and Student Ambassadors, to go with their retelling of the story, aimed at Year 5 and 6 students. Once edited, their artwork will be accompanied by students' oral retelling of the story and displayed on the European Storytelling Archive website for use by teachers and younger students. The project aims to preserve and pass on the oral storytelling tradition for future generations.
Students discovered that 'there's more to art than just drawing', and found the day 'brilliant and fun.' They found the BA Illustration students they worked with 'inspirational' and that the Student Ambassadors were 'enthusiastic' and 'knowledgeable.' One student said "I loved it all - just wish the day was longer."
