Martin Salisbury is Professor of Illustration and Pathway Leader for the MA Children's Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. He has written widely on the subject of illustration for children, including Illustrating Children's Book Illustration (A&C Black, 2004) and Play Pen: New Children's Book Illustration (Laurence King, 2007), both of which are now published in numerous languages worldwide. Martin was a member of the judging panel for the 2007 Bologna Ragazzi Awards. His most recent book Children's Picturebooks: the Art of Visual Storytelling was published in January 2012 and rose to No. 1 in Amazon.com's Graphic Design bestseller's list.
Axel Scheffler was born in Hamburg, Germany. At school he was good at art, but didn't think of a career in illustration until he won a cuddly purple cow in a drawing competition. He moved to England in 1982 to learn English and study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art and then set up home in London. Axel illustrated a number of books for various publishers, and in 1993 Kate Wilson - now Managing Director of Nosy Crow- suggested him as the illustrator for Julia Donaldson's first picture book text, A Squash and a Squeeze. This was the start of a hugely successful partnership: their bestselling modern classic, The Gruffalo, has sold over three-and-a-half million copies worldwide, and the TV animation was broadcast on Christmas day 2009. Axel has illustrated a number of other highly successful books, including Muddle Farm, and his books have been translated into 42 languages.
Paula Metcalf is an author/illustrator who has just published her 8th picture book with Macmillan, and is currently writing 5 more stories for them - all due to be published in 2013. She completed the MA Children's Book Illustration in 2004 and is now a visiting lecturer on the same course. During 2008 Paula was selected as the first Illustrator-in-Residence at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Buckinghamshire.
Voted one of Booktrust's ten Best New Illustrators, Alexis Deacon's Beegu won the New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year, and was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal. His recent titles include Soonchild written by Russel Hoban and Croc and Bird published by Random House Children's books. Alexis also lectures part-time on the MA Children's Book Illustration.
Marta Altes' first children's book No! was published by Child's Play International in 2011 and has been shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's book Prize and will be published in Danish, Georgian, German and Korean. Working as a designer and illustrator in Spain and Britain, Marta's exuberant work is used for editorial work, product design, chapterbooks and picturebooks. Her first book with Macmillan, Grandpa, will be published in July 2013. Marta lectures part-time on the MA Children's Book Illustration.
