Seville, 2010-11
During the last week of September 2011 staff and students from Cambridge School of Art's Illustration (and Animation) course visited the extraordinary, vibrant and colourful city of Seville in Southern Spain. The aim of this week of intensive drawing was to react to unfamiliar surroundings through intense observation, collecting and recording information in the form of sketchbooks.
Encouraged to experiment with media, composition and format, students were drawing from 9.30 am to 5pm each day and then spent a further hour critiquing the work each evening. This allowed for instant feedback that students could then act upon during the next day's drawing sessions. Students from both degree courses used the visual information gathered during the week to develop a series of projects upon their return to Cambridge.

Porto, 2007-2009
In the years 2007-209 our Illustration students and staff spent an intensive and exhausting week exploring and documenting this fascinating city through observational drawing and sketchbook work. Highlights of the Porto trips included visits to the decaying Bolhao vegetable market and visits to the Calem and Sandeman port lodges, where we were made very welcome.
In 2009, trip organiser Chris Draper gave a talk to visual communications students at the prestigious Faculdade de Belas Artes at the University of Porto. Portuguese students were excited to see examples of our student work, and several took up the invitation to join our evening crits back at the hotel, where they had a chance to talk in more depth and to discuss courses with our students.
