The Searle Award for Creativity

The Searle Award trophy

The Searle Award trophy

This annual award is open to all students in Cambridge School of Art, and is judged on the basis of creative responses, in any medium, to a set theme.

Ronald Searle, who generously founded this award several years ago and sadly passed away in 2011, was one of the great alumni of Cambridge School of Art, famed for his illustrations, and particularly the creation of 'St Trinians'. It is perhaps less well known that in his early life he was a Japanese Prisoner of War in Burma during World War 2, an experience which resulted in a remarkable output of drawings.

The theme this year was 'Migration', reflecting the humanitarian aspect of Searle's work, although students were able to explore it from any point of view - e.g. personal, psychological, social, ornithological, environmental, or economic.

The prize was awarded jointly to Trudi Esberger and Jo Miller on 22 March 2012. The shortlisted works were exhibited in Ruskin Gallery following the prize-giving ceremony.
