About us

Our Faculty is renowned for its teaching and research excellence. Four of our subjects, (English, Music, Philosophy and Theology and Religious Studies), were rated 'Excellent' by the Sunday Times University Guide 2008.

The Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences provides students and employers with first-class teaching, research and consultancy relevant to professional activity in arts, law and social sciences.

We are committed to the mutual reinforcement of theory and practice in teaching and research and have shaped our curriculum to ensure that traditional disciplines retain a clear, academic identity but translate effectively into courses with professional relevance.

We encourage our students to excel in both national and international arenas and promote language learning and intercultural understanding.

In the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 we achieved outstanding success, with four subject areas rated as having 'world leading' research, five subjects as having 'international' level research, and History and English being rated among the best in the country.

We support the Cultures of the Digital Economy Research Institute (CoDE) and eleven international research clusters, from the Centre for Children's Book Studies to the Justice and Communities Research Unit.

Our work, in conjunction with a large number of partners in the creative and cultural industries, enriches the cultural life of both our university and local communities through a full programme of art, music, drama and film.
