Research and Expertise


Welcome to this overview of the range of research and expertise in the Department of Economics, Strategy, Marketing and Enterprise (ESME). In addition to economics, strategy, marketing and enterprise, ESME staff also undertake research and consultancy on international business, sustainable management and development, and technological innovation. Economics

Dr Ioana Negru is an expert on ethics and economics. She applies research on heterodox economics, ethics in economics pluralism, Austrian and other schools of economic thought to issues such as the role of charitable organisations, trusts, gift-giving and sustainability. Dr Nick Drydakis researches labour economics applied to the study of discrimination in the labour market, employees' job satisfaction, and ethnic identity. Dr Peter MacDonald is an applied micro-economist with expertise on the economics of military outsourcing and the development of public private partnerships in transport in the EU. Dr Craig Duckworth is a scholar in philosophy and economics. He researches the relationships between ethics and economics, with a focus on business ethics, corporate social responsibility and sustainability. Director of the Corporate Governance Unit Stephen Bloomfield is an expert on venture capital and an acknowledged authority on corporate governance, in which the Lord Ashcroft International Business School (LAIBS) masters' course is a sector leader. Dr Robin Gowers' expertise is in the financial services sector, with a particular focus on strategic risk management and the impact of e-business.




Strategy

Director of Corporate Education and UK Partnerships Jon Salkeld is a specialist in corporate education with in-depth experience of delivering customised leadership training programmes to Crawford & Company, County Councils, and Fire and Rescue Services. Dr Elisa Alt researches strategy from a business sustainability perspective. Dr Greg O'Shea specialises in self-managed work teams and democratic organisations. He is a partner in Grape People, and provides consultantancy to Nordic organisations working with new and emerging technologies. David Flude researches organisational culture and its modification in collaborative ventures, with in depth expertise of the Police Service. Dr Maria Karafyllia's research focuses on the resource-based view of the firm and small business strategy. Steve McDonald researches leadership and management and is a consultant to small businesses.


Marketing

Deputy Head of Department Dr Jonathan Wilson is an expert on on business marketing, specialising in Chinese brands and cultural values. He is also author of 'Essentials of Business Research' 2nd ed. 2013. Niall Caldwell's research is on brand image and equity of cultural institutions, including museums, universities, cities and countries, marketing epistemologies, and the philosophy of marketing. Dr Nektarios Tzempelikos' expertise is key account management and he undertakes research on relationship marketing, business-to-business marketing, services marketing, marketing management, customer value and customer equity. Other areas of research include: new product development management and new service development (Cassie Jones); and the creation and development of value propositions, and marketing in public sector higher education institutions (Paul Weeks). Tim Froggett has extensive experience in financial services management and specialised knowledge of the brewing sector.

Enterprise

Professor Gary Packham, Deputy Dean for Research, researches and publishes on entrepreneurship education, small business management and strategy, economic development policy, small business management and strategy, technology transfer, and innovation management and commercialization. Andrew Brady, is a director of Social Enterprise East of England and leader of the university's 3rd Sector Futures Initiative. He has extensive expertise in practical management training for social enterprise staff. Dr Elisa Alt applies strategy, entrepreneurship, and sustainability lenses to explore how social intrapreneurs emerge and thrive. Robert Jones specialises in entrepreneurship and innovation. His current area of research focuses on the changing issues SMEs face in their life cycles. Saeed Sadighi specialises on innovation in assistive technologies with a focus on cross-cultural factors and obstacles for SMEs in this sector. Henry Lydiate is an experienced provider of international business consultancy in the creative arts and cultural industries.

Professor Lester Lloyd-Reason is Director of the Centre for Enterprise, Development and Research (CEDAR), a team of expert academic, highly successful practitioners and world-class entrepreneurs. ESME staff working with CEDAR include: CEDAR Deputy Director Lianne Miller, an organisational psychologist researching in the field of cognition with a focus on performance and growth; Dr Brynn Deprey, who has expertise in the field of international entrepreneurship, specifically on small to medium-sized professional service firms; Leigh Sear, who specializes small business and entrepreneurship; Paul Bourne, who uses traditional consultancy methodologies and other methods inspired by the arts to unlock employee potential; and Louise Chalkley, who researches entrepreneurial learning processes and entrepreneurship and the construction of gender.



International Business

Dr Swetketu Patnaik's research interest is change / evolution of social systems with a focus on institutional and (inter)-organisational change; institutional and co-evolution theories; inter-organisational relationships; collaborative innovation; and development of alliance and acquisition capabilities in Indian business organisations. He has undertaken in-depth research on international R&D collaborations in the (bio) pharmaceutical industry. Dr Lin Yan specialises in international entrepreneurship, undertaking comparative research on how mobile banking alleviates poverty among women entrepreneurs in China, Peru and Tanzania, and the second on small businesses in the renewable energy sector in the UK, France and Germany. Dr Sandra Selmanovic has considerable international experience through consultancy, research and project management for international organisations including UN Conference on Trade and Development, European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company and European Patent Office. She has also focused on comparative innovation support in Egypt and Morocco.

In addition, ESME staff have international research and consultancy expertise in: China (brands and cultural values, Dr Jonathan Wilson; sustainable supply chain management Dr Ying Xie); Nordic countries (new and emerging technologies, Dr Greg O'Shea: Greece (Migration Policy Institute, Dr Nektarios Tzempelikos): Japan (discarded technology and IT recovery, Dr Alison Stowell); and Brazil (social intrapreneurship, Dr Elisa Alt)

Sustainable Development and Management

Sustainable development and sustainable management is another area in which ESME has research experience and expertise. Dr Beatriz Acevedo is Director of GoGreen Pilot'12. Co-funded by the Higher Education Academy, the GoGreen project seeks to promite environmental practices in organisations at the same time as enhancing employment opportunities for undergraduates. Working with Dr Acevedo on this project is Dr Alison Stowell. Allison's expertise is on the impact of discarded technology. She has undertaken research in the UK and Japan on information technology (IT) recovery organisations. Also in this area is Dr Ying Xie, who specialises in green supply chain management, modelling and simulation, and Dr Lin Yan who is researching the renewable energy sector. Dr Elisa Alt's research focuses on strategic business sustainability, with a particular interest in social intrapreneurship.



Innovation and Technology Management

ESME Research Leader Dr Ruth McNally has extensive experience of research on the social, legal and policy dimensions of biotechnology and genomics, including forensics. She is currently Co-I on an ESRC project developing novel ways of doing social research with Big Data in genomics; and Co-I on the EPSRC Catalyst project on citizen-led innovation in ICTs where she is using PROTEE, a novel project evaluation and management tool.

Dr Swetketu Patnaik researches the management of collaborative innovation in high tech areas, including the formation and management of biopharmaceutical product development collaborations and alliances. Dr Sandra Selmanovic, who has expertise in innovation policy, innovation indicators and the measurement of innovation performance.

Other technologies that ESME researchers study include ICT / e-commerce (Professor Gary Packham); discarded technologies (Dr Alison Stowell); renewable energy and mobile banking (Dr Lin Yan).

ESME staff Professor Lester Lloyd-Reason, Dr Greg O'Shea, Dr Ruth McNally, Dr Ying Xie, Saeed Sadighi, and Dr Sandra Selmanovic, are also undertaking research on assistive technologies as part of CURA-B, an EU-supported project on information and communication technology innovations for supporting independent living for the ageing and chronically ill. Our roles in this project include project evaluation, policy analysis, business model development, and cost-benefit analyses.
