IIMP Seminar - Doing Qualitative Discourse Analysis: Introducing Critical and Multimodal Approaches

Organised by the Institute for International Management Practice - (IIMP)

Speakers: Prof Chris Ivory and Dr Will Turner
Date: Monday 10 June 2013
Time: 2.30-3.30
Venue: Sawyers Building, Chelmsford Campus
Room: Saw 003

All staff and students of Anglia Ruskin are welcome to attend.

Discourse Analysis comes in many forms; it is anything but a unified field of enquiry. That can sometimes make it difficult to know how to make the most out of qualitative data. Whether we analyse interviews, surveys, media texts or some other form of representation, there are invariably social, political and ideological stories to tell. The critical question is of course how to access and appreciate those hidden stories.

Professor Ivory and Dr Turner will present an overview of some established approaches to that question. They will give practical and down to earth insights into how to undertake and organise qualitative research in ways that combine subtlety, rigour and effectiveness.

IIMP Seminar - Assessing the value of university regional engagement

Organised by the Institute for International Management Practice

'Assessing the value of university regional engagement'

Date: Monday 10 June 2013
Time: 12.30
Venue: Cambridge, HEL 114
Speaker: Professor David Charles, European Policies Research Centre, School of Government and Public Policy, University of Strathclyde

There is considerable interest at present in assessing university engagement and knowledge exchange including its incorporation in various ranking approaches. This presentation examines various approaches to the measurement of engagement and identifies a number of challenges arising from the diversity of forms of engagement and its nature as a shared activity with external partners. It will be argued that whilst we can measure specific forms of engagement, and examples will be provided, ranking of universities on such measures is fundamentally flawed. Instead data can be used in benchmarking which allows the development of university engagement strategies and a process of mutual learning between universities. An example of a tool for such learning processes will be presented.

Guest Lecture by Prof Paul Fudulu - Revisiting the Fundamental Methodological Principles of Economic Research: Failures and Achievements

Speaker: Prof Paul Fudulu, Professor of Economics at University of Bucharest
Date: Friday 24 May 2013
Time: 12:00 - 13:00
Location: Cambridge Campus
Room: HEL 310

All staff and PhD students of Anglia Ruskin University are welcome to attend.

There is in economic science a bizarre parallelism. On one hand, after about two and a half centuries of economic research fundamental problems are still waiting for solutions: We know so little about how human objectives are formed and evolve that an economist so influential as Frank Knight once said that they are "the most obstinately unknown of all unknowns" in economic science; We know so little about how preferences are formed that Becker's achievement in generalizing economic behavior had to be based on the unnatural assumption of stable fundamental preferences across time and individuals; We still know so little about the nature of institutions and how they evolve that the economist who contributed so much to this field, Douglass North, was relatively lately complaining that he did not know enough; And the list of failures can be extended.

On the other hand, economists claim for their field methodological principles that defy the methodological principles of the very successful natural sciences: Man's indetermination or his paradoxical nature; Variability or the existence of things that do not "stay put" and as such that are not amenable to scientific description; Complexity that precludes the existence and identification of relevant causal principles; Economic laws and principles that are in no way related to the more general laws revealed by other sciences.

Then is it the case of a special nature of the economic province or is it the case of a flawed perspective that looks for cover up in peculiar features of its field? And if the economic science adopts methodological principles that natural sciences have never abandoned, how far can we get?

Guest Lecture by Prof Paul Fudulu - Understanding the Phenomenon of Culture and its Economic Consequences based on the Anti-Entropic Formation of Human Ends

Speaker: Prof Paul Fudulu, Professor of Economics at University of Bucharest
Date: Thursday 23 May 2013
Time: 11:00 - 13:00
Location: Cambridge Campus
Room: HEL 251

All staff of Anglia Ruskin University are welcome to attend.

However optimistic a stance one takes in assessing our understanding of the phenomenon of culture and its economic impact, sad conclusions are unavoidable. Despite the fact that there have been many attempts to define this relationship, the conclusions made do not make economic sense, and as such are unworkable. Also, there is no sound theory explaining how cultures are formed and evolve, and no solid, comprehensive theoretical basis to relate culture to economic performance. Finally, there are no quantitative studies of the economic impact of culture that impart more than mixed results.

The way out of this plight is not tinkering but constructing anew. The current orthodox economic theory is simply not fit to deal with trans-cultural aspects - this is what is needed. Therefore, we should start from redefining the relationship in a non-tautological manner, finding sound explanations for concepts and phenomena that are intimately related to culture: preferences, rules, institutions, the emergence of preferences and rules through processes that do not assume human design, and - primarily - the nature and formation of human ends, which trigger all human actions and their consequences.

Talk by Prof Simon Down - "How to write and publish quality journal articles based on qualitative data"

Organised by the Institute for International Management Practice - (IIMP)

"How to write and publish quality journal articles based on qualitative data"

Time: 11:00am, followed by lunch
Venue: Lord Ashcroft Building, Chelmsford campus
Room:
MAB 112

All staff and students of Anglia Ruskin are welcome to attend.

Many scholars see publishing journal articles with qualitative data as difficult and problematic, especially in terms of higher quality journals. At root, this is often a result of basic misconceptions about the underlying philosophical purpose of interpretively-based research, how best to present the data, and how the data illustrates or supports the argument your paper is making. Prof Down will talk about how to approach and present qualitative data to best effect in journal articles, and on why being defensive about the limitations of qualitative data is a tactical mistake. His talk will offer basic, practical advice on how to improve your article.

April 2013

IIMP Economic Seminar

Organised by the
Institute for International Management Practice

'Capability, transaction and scale-scope: Rival or complementary explanations of organisational boundaries?'

Guest speaker: Professor Mario Morroni author of 'Knowledge, Scale and Transactions in the Theory of the Firm'
Date: Monday 29th April 2013
Time:
12:30pm, starting with light lunch
Location: Lord Ashcroft Building, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge Campus
Room: LAB 309

The growth of a firm is the consequence of managerial ability to set a strategy that exploits the organisational coordination of capabilities while limiting errors due to cognitive inertia and myopia.

In his talk Professor Morroni will discuss the main factors determining organisational boundaries. He will argue that they are key to explain a firm's performance and growth under uncertainty, when cognitive competence is limited and some relevant knowledge is tacit (i.e., non-transmittable and characterised by set-up processes with high fixed costs). With the spread of the knowledge-based economy these conditions are becoming increasingly important and understanding them has become essential for researchers today.

Professor Emanuele Giovannetti, professor of Economics at the IIMP will also give a talk at this event.

It's official - the ESRC are recommending the use of Twitter for impact. It provides a quick and easy way to communicate with a large number of people". That's only part of the story though - thinking strategically about your online reputation is essential for academics today: believing in your work, getting an audience for it, and building the recognition you deserve. In this seminar, I demonstrate from my own experience how to use tools such as Twitter, Facebook, WordPress (blogging) and LinkedIn to your advantage.

The use of Reference Management Softwares for academic research

Organised by the Institute for International Management Practice

Guest speaker: Dr Andrea Moro - University of Leicester
Date: Wednesday 17 April 2013
Time: 12:30pm, starting with light lunch
Location: Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge Campus
Room: HEL 223

All students and staff of ARU are welcome to attend.

In this event Dr Andrea Moro will explain how to use EndNote (and other similar software packages) to save time when working on literature reviews and research publications. Reference management software are typically used to save time in formatting the list of references according to the specific style of a journal or book. However, they can also be used as tools for speeding up the process of writing the literature review section of articles and to support the process of searching for and analysing literature. The presentation focuses less on how to use a specific software package, than on demonstrating the advantages and shortcomings of reference management software in the everyday practice of academic research.

About the presenter:

Dr Andrea Moro is Lecturer in Finance at the University of Leicester - School of Management. His research addresses the intersection of entrepreneurship and finance, in particular the role of trust in financial relationships. Dr Moro has published extensively in high-ranking journals (e.g. Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Banking and Finance) and uses EndNote to manage his literature reviews.

Nick Ellerby works alongside a range of individuals and organisations focusing on leadership, developing freedom and responsibility, team processes, mentoring and organisational development.

About Whole Person Learning (WPL)

Whole Person Learning (WPL) is a radical educational approach developed by Oasis, and supported by global partners. With a basis in the human potential movement, it seeks to enable people to bring more of themselves to their lives, work and communities. Most approaches to learning rely on the cognitive acquisition of knowledge. They do not take account of experiential, practical, affective and imaginal ways of learning.

Whole Person Learning recognises that human beings exist in a network of relationships and interdependent systems. It puts the same value on our spiritual and imaginal worlds as our intellect and physicality. Whole Person Learning allows learners to discover more of their inner dimension, to learn from first-hand experience and to understand the consequences of the decisions they make. It enhances personal responsibility, autonomy and wellbeing.

Core to the approach is the ability of the person to know themselves and to learn how to know themselves.
This offers an opportunity for greater self-management and efficacy, and access to authentic personal power and authority. By extension, this greater autonomy can then translate into a richer contribution to one's work, personal relationships, community and ultimately to the planet. This methodology is rigorous, grounded in extensive, on going action research, and applicable to all life-work contexts.

Talk: How to write and publish quality journal articles based on quantitative data

"How to write and publish quality journal articles based on quantitative data"

Speakers: Prof Teemu Kautonen and Dr Emanuele Giovannetti
Date: 5 March 2013
Time: 12.30 (starting with lunch)
Venue: Lord Ashcroft Building, Cambridge Campus
Room: LAB 006

In this event Professors Emanuele Giovanetti (economics) and Teemu Kautonen (entrepreneurship/management) will discuss the tricks of the trade of preparing journal articles that apply statistical methods. The purpose of the talk is to highlight critical issues that are specific for quantitatively oriented articles and discuss good practices for overcoming typical pitfalls. Writing good quantitative papers is not witchcraft - but developing tacit knowledge of the rules of the game makes your writing more efficient, increases your chances of success in high-quality journals and lets you focus most of your energy on the academic content rather than on how to translate it into a good paper.

Venue: Lord Ashcroft Building, Cambridge
Room: LAB 309

This seminar seeks to take you through the idea of subreption and its integration into social science that began with Thorstein Veblen. Presenting work that advocates subreption as the third approach within institutional economics as with institutional subreption, which then elaborates on this concept to transcend the institutional arrangement and then question the ontology of "modern" society in regard to the natural environment with ownership subreption and disorientation subreption. These three layers of subreption rely on the work of Immanuel Kant, Thorstein Veblen, Michel Foucault, Robert Romanyshyn, and many more.

Seminar

'Realising and increasing impact and engagement: through creativity, interdisciplinarity and co-creation at the front end of innovation'

Speaker: Dr Lorraine Warren
Date: 22 January 2013
Time: 12.30 starting with lunch
Venue: Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge Campus
Room: HEL 114

This seminar is open to all staff and students of Anglia Ruskin University.

This seminar shows how to increase impact and engagement for university researchers through the use of interdisciplinary 'creative sandpits' which can be developed as a new mechanism for rapid knowledge exchange between academia, business and the surrounding community, particularly for Digital Media, where entry barriers to innovation can be low. The notion of the creative sandpit is drawn from the 'barcamp', 'unconference' and 'hackfest' cultures that have emerged in the US, and is linked here to the 'front-end' of innovation, an area which remains under theorised, and methodologically weak.

Traditional technology transfer processes tend to follow the rather linear 'valley of death' model where funding is sought to develop a limited number of potential products. While this model has achieved some success during the last decade through Science Enterprise Challenge (SEC) and Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF), this is limited, and the UK still struggles to realise the full impact of its research base. Complementing this model through mechanisms which are easy to access and at relatively low cost is shown to increase visibility and energise engagement, and following on from that, research impact. In doing so, concepts of open innovation, co-creation and lead-user involvement are embraced with a view to developing better management processes for such engagement in the university context. In addition, it is suggested that the concept of emergence be developed to provide richer theoretical underpinning for the front end of innovation.

Public Event - Guest Lecture

Responding to the downturn - Where will the growth come from?
Plotting Essex's route out of recession

Video available at: http://mycapture.anglia.ac.uk/ess/echo/presentation/95ceee87-5b8f-4d31-b506-ba4a91e7f60d

Business, political and academic figures will be discussing financial crisis

Date: Wednesday 16 January 2013
Venue: Lord Ashcroft Building, Chelmsford
Room: MAB 221 - Main Auditorium
Time: 18:00 (starting with drinks reception)

This is a free public event. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The collapse of Lehman Brothers led to the near melt down of the financial (and capitalist) system in September 2008. The effects of the financial crisis have seen the deepest post war recession in many countries and changes to social security systems as governments struggle with meeting the burden of their debts.

Keith Attwood (Chief Executive, e2v, the Chelmsford based global technology company), Councillor Kevin Bentley (Essex County Council Cabinet Member on Economic Growth, Waste & Recycling) and Dr Trevor Bolton (Dean, Lord Ashcroft International Business School) will share their views on the role that each of their groups and sectors have in enabling future economic growth. They will also consider both the short term and long term requirements that will enable the economy to return to stable growth together with the vital roles that each of their groups can play in this process.

Dr Trevor Bolton

Dean of Anglia Ruskin's Lord Ashcroft International Business School

The current crisis will not just affect all of us, but probably also our children and grandchildren - it is that big. We are in the worst possible type of recession and the only solution is that we can grow our way out of the current predicament.

The human cost of the financial crisis that began in 2007 has already been huge. The things that we took for granted up to that point, such as growth, credit and prosperity, are now in short supply. With UK output around 3% below its pre-recession levels this is the longest downturn in UK history.

In Essex we are lucky to have relatively low unemployment but for long-term stable growth we continue to need an educated and trained workforce, and the appetite for self-improvement and risk taking needs to be encouraged.

Hopefully this event will help people to understand why we are in this situation and provide an insight into what the future might hold for businesses and consumers in Essex.

April 2012

Cultural Olympiads and the creative sector: moving beyond a quantitative approach to legacy. Experiences from Torino 2006 and London 2012

A presentation by Dr Ilaria Pappalepore

Wednesday, 2 May, 18:00 to 19:00, Lord Ashcroft Building Cambridge (room tbc)

The development of entrepreneurship and local talent in the host region is usually considered as an important outcome of organizing mega events such as Olympic Games, World Expos or European Capital of Culture. However, increasingly large-scale cultural events tend to involve internationally recognised artists rather than local ones, in order to extend the scope of the event, attract international visitors and enhance media attention. A track record of the benefits for local cultural firms is rarely kept, and - when collected - data generally only comprises measurements of increased audiences, funding and production. This IOC funded research focused instead on softer impacts (such as improved contacts, effects on creative inspiration and informal learning) by exploring local creative industry professionals' perceptions and feelings towards the Cultural Olympiad in Turin (2006) and London (2008-2012).

The GB Women's Volleyball Team, who overcame withdrawal of their financing to become even more determined to be successful and leave a legacy.

Shadows and Darkness, Silence and Secrets: The Poetics of Organisational Space

A talk by Dr Andrew Armitage

Thursday, 26 April 2012, 15:00 to 16:00, Lord Ashcroft Building Cambridge (LAB 214)

Gaston Bachelard's poetics and reveries is a rejection of rationalist thinking and enquiry, and the genesis of pedagogical practices that centre the individual as a free, moral, and authentic agent in coming to know the world. This was also central to the Critical Pedagogy of Paulo Freire, one of the greatest adult educators of the 20th century.

This talk will synthesize for the first time Gaston Bachelard's and Paulo Freire's approaches to understand the world through alternative realities, where nothing is stable and everything is in flux, and authentic reality and truth can only be grasped through dialogue.

Guest lecture and seminar on business culture and intercultural conflicts in international organisations in Hungary

Presented by Dr Klara Falk-Bánó

Guest lecture: (Business) culture and intercultural conflicts in international organisations
Wednesday, 25 April 16:00 to 17:00, HEL 223

Guest seminar: Intercultural case studies and managerial styles in today's business world
Wednesday, 25 April 17:00 to 18:00, HEL 223

In today's dynamic world where globalisation is the key issue, we can see, paradoxically, the importance of increasing cultural diversity at the same time - especially in Europe, where there are so many very different cultures. It is not by accident that the GLOBE project has 10 cultural clusters in the world, out of which there five are in Europe.

Dr Klára Falk-Bánó's (visiting lecturer from Budapest Business School) lecture focuses on the (business) cultural characteristics of East Central European cultures through the example of Hungary. It gives some general information on the country briefly, specifies the cultural profile of Hungary but the main focus is on how to do business in Hungary and what are the cultural characteristics which may cause conflicts in international organisations based in Hungary. The analysis is based on Klara's research in mainly British-Hungarian and American-Hungarian international organisations, quoting from some 450 deep interviews made with British, American and Hungarian managers and employees in the last 18 years.

Out of the crisis: The malaise of the UK higher education system

A talk held by Dr Andy Armitage

Wednesday, 14 March 2012, 13:00 to 14:00, Lord Ashcroft Building Chelmsford (MAB 015)

This talk challenges the notion that contemporary management has not adopted what might be termed a 'critical stance' towards its practices. It will be argued that it is trapped within the modernist target setting culture, and that the current malaise of management thinking is a consequence of an elitist education system. In responding to these concerns, this talk will advance a response to be found within Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy. It is argued that critical pedagogy, dialogue, and reflexive learning environments are central to the pursuit of individual liberty and freedom in education, requiring educators to have hightened awareness of reflective and reflexive pedagogical practices, which can only emerge if learning environments are infused with the dialogue, which supports human freedom and an ethics of respect.

This talk is open to all staff and students from all disciplines. Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Guest lecture on Ethnography

Presented by Dr Martijn Koster

Thursday, 23 February, 16:00 to 18:00, Lord Ashcroft Building (LAB311/MAB209), Cambridge and Chelmsford campus

Ethnography has gained a small but steady presence in Management and Organisation Studies. Ethnography seeks to understand the local dynamics of a particular research site and sets out to answer the question 'What's going on here?'. Its methodological stance is especially useful in cross-cultural settings.

Dr Martijn Koster will discuss the principles of ethnography and its roots in anthropology and sociology and its particular relation to social theory. He will present examples of his own research and discuss some of its practical and ethical implications as well as ethnography constructs alternatives to mainstream theories and policies.

Dr Martijn Koster, a lecturer and researcher at the Utrecht School of Governance, Utrecht University (NL), will be visiting us in the context of the ERASMUS agreement from 20-23 February. Martijn holds a degree in Development Sociology from Wageningen University (NL) and has conducted ethnographic research in the Netherlands, Brazil and Bolovia. His PhD thesis, In Fear of Abandonment: Slum Life, Community Leaders and Politics in Recife Brazil, deals with issues like local slum leadership, politics, local organisations, slum upgrading, and citizenship. Currently, Martijn is involved in a research project on citizenship, youth and urban renewal in Overvecht, an underprivileged neighbourhood in Utrecht. Martijn lectures on subjects such as organisational culture, change and the athropology of organisations.

Wanted: Dead or Alive

Tiger Farms and Business Ethics

A talk by Simon Evans

Tuesday, 29 November 2011, 13:00 to 14:00, Lord Ashcroft Building (MAB 002A)

Tigers are one of the most endangered species on the planet, threatened by such activities as habitat loss due to rapidly expanding human populations and persecution as they come into increasing contact with human populations. Efforts to protect this charismatic species have failed to arrest the ongoing decline of tiger numbers. In response, a range of business solutions have been proposed. One of the most controversial of these surrounds the introduction of tiger farms in China.

This talk will develop the argument for and against such market-based response to countering species decline.

This talk is open to all staff and students. There is no need to book a place, but spaces are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Guest lecture Series 2011: Karen Hester on her role as Operations Director of Adnams plc

Wednesday, 23 November 2011, 17:00 to 19:00, Lord Ashcroft Building Cambridge (LAB 006)

As Operations Director, Karen Hester manages 100 employees at Adnams, a famous brewery, and is responsible for maintaining Adnam's beer quality, from production right through to delivery.

Karen Hester first joined Adnams 20 years ago as an office cleaner. However, her background as a lorry and ambulance driver in the Army quickly brought her to the attention of Andy Wood, now Managing Director of Adnams, who was Head of Logistics for Adnams at the time. He saw that Karen's expertise with the Logistical Corps was perfectly transferable to the brewery's logistics division.

Aside from working in the transport and customer service departments, Karen Hester also played a significant role in the development of Adnam's award-winning Distribution Centre in 2006. Karen Hester project managed the eco-efficient distribution centre to time and budget, relocating the full infrastructure and all the stock and employees without any disruption to customer service, or Adnam's business as a whole - a project which she excelled and now regards as the highlight of her career to date.

Karen Hester also received the East of England Business Woman Award in 2008.

Guest lecture: The story of the Financial Crisis - and can Governments save us?

Guest lecture for 2nd year International Business Module students

Guest speaker: Kate Barker

Tuesday, 22 November, 9:00 to 11:00, Lord Ashcroft Building Chelmsford (MAB 221)

This talk will cover a brief account of why the crisis occurred, with an evaluation of the policies undertaken in the US, EU and particularly the UK to tackle it. The Eurozone crisis is now evolving as an aftershock - what does this mean for the global economy and for the UK? Business confidence is at a low ebb, but perhaps of more lasting significance is the emergence of challenge in the developed world to the way in which incomes and wealth are distributed.

Kate Barker is an outstanding British economist who has earned the immense respect of her peers, not just in the city, but throughout the international finance arena. She is also widely acclaimed for her continuing services to education in the East of England.

A member of the Bank of England's prestigious Monetary Policy Committee for nine years, from 2001-2010, she was responsible for setting interest rates each month in order to keep inflation on track to meet the Government's target. Kate is a strong voice in the economy and has been much quoted on the recent global financial crisis.

Since leaving the MPC, Kate has become a Senior Adviser to Credit Suisse, and been appointed to a number of private sector non-executive positions. She is continuing with public policy as a non-executive director of the Office of Budget Responsibility, and with involvement in Higher Education as a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Department of Land Economy in the old university in Cambridge.

If you wish to attend, but aren't enrolled in the International Business module, please contact Hannah Myatt, Student Experience Co-ordinator (Chelmsford).

It provides and opportunity for public interdisciplinary and practitioner forum for those of us seeking to take responsibility for transforming ourselves and working towards the long-term sustainability of the planet.

The panel discussion is open to all staff and students from all disciplines. There is no need to book in advance, but places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Meaningful Work

Monday, 17 October, 16:30 to 18:00, Lord Ashcroft Building (LAB 307), Cambridge

Lips-Wiersma and Morris have just published a book on Meaningful Work called 'The Map of Meaning', which has received warm reviews. The book is said to be 'poetic', 'profound' and 'provocative'.

In this seminar, the results of Lipps-Wiersma and Morris's research on meaningful work will be discussed in terms of:

What is the contemporary meaning of meaningful work?
How do we make meaningful work visible to ourselves and others in organisations and stay in touch with it?
What is the role of balance in meaningful work?
What are the prerequisites to meaningful work?

In spite of the range of management techniques that have been aimed at motivating the human being, such as total quality management, teamwork, organisational culture management, leadership training and, more recently, engagement techniques, many people are experiencing a decrease in the meaning of work which has been exacerbated by the recent crisis (Van Luyck, 2011). The question is whether we have to passively accept what work is becoming or whether we can reclaim our humanity at work.

This seminar is suitable for anyone who has a professional or personal interest in creating meaningful work. For further information, please get in touch with Dr Jonathan Smith.

How do you cope as a leader?

Sergeant Ginger Charles PhD, Police Sergeant and Research Psychologist, Criminal Investigation Department, City of Arvada Police Department

Wednesday, 16 March 2011, 17:30 to 19:00, Coslett Building (COS 124), Cambridge Campus

This is an open event for all AIBS students and seats are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Leadership is a demanding and challenging task, and is only becoming more so. How do leaders cope with these challenges? How do they remain fit and strong, and prosper in such an environment of challenge that can be created with redundancies, closures, funding cuts and all the people issues associated with these?

The speaker has worked within the police environment in America for over 20 years and has been researching and testing ways in which police officers cope with the extremely challenging nature of their role. She argues that many of the challenges faced by leaders generally are quite similar to the challenges experiences by police officers.

Within the policing role, however, the speaker argues that these challenges are more pronounced and easier to see than they can be in other leadership positions. This lecture is about exploring some of the challenges experienced by police officers looking at how they cope with these, and then drawing lessons from these experiences for wider leadership roles.

Reach for the Skies

Where art and enterprise meet in a series of incredible journeys

Ruskin Gallery, 16 - 25 March 2010
An exhibition and workshop on creativity, innovation, risk and enterprise.

As part of the actions being coordinated by the Ashcroft International Business School to embed enterprise and entrepreneurship across Anglia Ruskin University, a series of workshops will be taking place in the Ruskin Gallery. A collaborative event between the Ashcroft International Business School, the Cambridge School of Art and the Ruskin Gallery, Reach for the Skies is a unique workshop which explores enterprise, innovation and creativity through the inspirational journeys of Chris Dobrowolski.

More about Chris Dobrowolski

Chris Dobrowolski is a driven man. An artist and entrepreneur, his work has focused on a series of journeys in vehicles "knocked up in his garden shed."

From home made boats and cars, to sledges and planes, Chris' incredible journeys have taken him to far flung parts of the world from Colchester to Japan, and even Hull to Antarctica!

What drives him to take incredible risks in the name of art?
Why is he considered so enterprising?
How do art and enterprise connect?
Why do business leaders from all over the world come and listen to Chris' incredible story?
Chris' most famous work, an aeroplane from his exhibition titled Skyscape/Escape, will be brought into the Ruskin Gallery to form the centrepiece of the workshops. This represents a unique opportunity for all staff and students of Anglia Ruskin University to see Chris' plane, to listen to his story and to be inspired to think about their own context for enterprise and innovation.

Workshop will be running on:

Wednesday 17 March 14.00 - 16.00 (students only)
Wednesday 17 March 17.00 - 19.00 (students only)
Wednesday 24 March 14.00 - 16.00 (students only)
Wednesday 24 March 17.00 - 19.00 (students only)
Thursday 25 March, 14:00 - 16:00 (general public)

Spaces for the workshops are strictly limited and must be booked in advance. If you would like to reserve a place or would like more information on the workshops, please email Stacey Stokes
