Corporate Work-based Learning Degree Wins National Award
Lord Ashcroft International Business School (LAIBS) celebrated another major achievement on 3 April when, in partnership with Barclays plc, they were announced the winners of one the prestigious National Target Jobs 2013 People Awards.
Barclays and Anglia Ruskin University have, in partnership, successfully designed, developed and managed the Retail Development Programme (RDP), which has at its heart the BA (Hons) Management & Leadership. The programme specifically targets new talent to the business with the aim of the trainees achieving the position of Branch Manager or equivalent within 3 years of joining the programme.
Now that the programme has seen 3 cohorts successfully graduate and is nearing the completion of its recruitment for the sixth consecutive cohort of 40 students, the management information data was available to tell a significant "valued added" success story and also highlight significant achievements in relation to diversity, retention, academic success and simultaneous career progression.
The Best School Leaver Programme is a new category for 2013 and winning is a particularly notable achievement, as this award was determined by a panel of apprentices and undergraduates facilitated by a team of mentors drawn from industry and agencies. The shortlisted competition for the award was extremely strong, namely; Accenture, Aviva, Bank of England, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, CGI, Siemens and Rolls-Royce.
Vanessa Knowles and Rachael Hall were delighted with the award and the national recognition that it represents. They once again attributed the success to everyone who had been involved with the programme from the idea inception through to the on-going management and delivery of what has become one of the Business School's flagship programmes
Vanessa Knowles
Principal Lecturer in Corporate Education and Work-based Learning
Winning a second award this academic year with this innovative, work-based degree programme continues to showcase how Lord Ashcroft International Business School is developing its practice based agenda and contributing to the University's wider corporate goal in relation to successfully sustaining Employer Engagement activity. Further Achievement for the MA Corporate Governance degree in Chelmsford
ICSA Software has agreed to allow successful graduates of the MA Corporate Governance course to be given certificates of basic competence in the use of their commercial software.
ICSA Software produces a software programme called Blueprint which is used by most of the world's largest companies to complete and maintain their statutory books. The award of the certificates is in recognition of the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of the tuition offered on the MA Corporate Governace/GradICSA and is not subject to further referral to ICSA Software on an individual student basis. The MA Corporate Governance at Lord Ashcroft International Business School (LAIBS) is unique among Masters level courses in the subject, in using Blueprint to act as the platform for much of the tuition on one of its central modules. Blueprint was introduced to the course five years ago.
Stephen Bloomfield
Director of the Corporate Governance Unit at LAIBS
This is further recognition of the class-leading characteristics of the MA Corporate Governance which has been consistently commended by external examiners for its content and coverage. Graduates of the course now receive an academic award of the highest calibre, a professional qualification and tuition in commercial software recognised as a sound platform for further development.

LAIBS wins funding to promote social entrepreneurship
Anglia Ruskin University's corporate plan commits us to promoting enterprise and entrepreneurship to students. An important part of this work is around social entrepreneurship and social enterprise: businesses and ventures established for social purposes rather than private profit. A team led from the Business School has just been successful in a funding bid, securing £25,000 from the HEFCE/UnLtd Social Entrepreneurship HE Support Initiative. The funding will be used to give awards to Anglia Ruskin staff and students (including recent graduates) who have an idea for a social venture.

'Where there is a will, there is a way!'
Yuliya's success story (international student from Kazakhstan)
For someone like me, with a passion for learning and experiencing new things, it was a wonderful opportunity to study in the UK at Anglia Ruskin University. I chose to study at Anglia Ruskin, because I found the course exactly suitable for my interests. It was quite exciting to study together with not only nice but clever people. Studying here never let me relax and kept my mind busy. The discipline of studying made me become more independent and self-reliant. I learned how to cope with obstacles on my own and considerably improved my self-management skills as regards handling problems.
Concerning the teaching methods and module content, it has stimulated my academic skills development and critical thinking. I would like to emphasize that the academic staff is highly qualified and knowledgeable, with special thanks to the English support teams who were always ready to help international students in overcoming all language-related difficulties.
It was an interesting challenge at all stages. At various points, it did get harder but it was never boring. I have acquired a valuable experience which genuinely contributed to my personal and professional development and opened up new horizons. I would recommend anyone to study at Anglia Ruskin. It is worth a mention here that there is a great difference between studying abroad and in your home country, because apart from the studying itself, this is a wonderful life experience. A different cultural milieu let me discover and experience so many things.
The additional advantage of LAIBS is the location of course. Cambridge is a fantastic place to study and evolve mentally to a different level. The atmosphere is just right and enriches the environment for learning. Having completed my Masters, I feel so inspired to continue with a PhD in the field of the CSR for the next couple of years.
Overall, though in the beginning, it seemed to be too difficult for a single person to tackle, a firm commitment on my part yielded a great sense of satisfaction. I would like to finish by referring to the saying 'Where there is a will, there is a way'. All my life I have followed this maxim which finally led me to doing my Masters at Anglia Ruskin.
I really enjoyed my time there and I have truly fallen in love with Anglia Ruskin, Cambridge and the UK!!!

Congratulations John McCullough on 25 years at Anglia Ruskin University
For a generation, John McCullough's has been a larger than life character in the Lord Ashcroft International Business School and the business school was delighted to recently celebrate John's 25 years at Anglia Ruskin University.John joined the then Danbury Park Management Centre in 1986 and was heavily involved in the design, management and delivery of the postgraduate Certificate in Management and Diploma in Management Studies. For many years, John was the focal point of an extremely successful Diploma in Management Studies residential where teams of postgraduate students worked tirelessly for three days to produce a real business plan for real clients, culminating in a public presentation of their plan which included the Greenwood management prize committee. John also managed a major consultancy project with Essex Police and was instrumental in the development of the Business School discussion paper series.
With the opening of the Michael Ashcroft Building in Chelmsford in 2005, John joined colleagues from the central campus and became part of the undergraduate and professional course teams facing this new world with the same level of enthusiasm as he devoted to the courses at Danbury.

Mrinal Chakraborty - Winner of the 10th Trimo Research Award
In March 2011, Mrinal Chakraborty completed his MA in Human Resource Management at LAIBS in Cambridge and has now won the 10th Trimo Research Award for his outstanding master thesis being the first Indian and first Anglia Ruskin student to have ever received this award.
Before coming to the UK to study in 2009, Mrinal's, my main focus from 2001 to 2009 was to develop as a motivational speaker within the Indian market. During this time, he had the opportunity to work for most Indian blue chip companies.
When he started his UK postgraduate qualification in 2009, his main aim was to fully focus on completing his Masters to his best ability, but that he soon realised that he could achieve far more than that. So he also became a chartered member of the CIPD. Coupled with his MA in HRM, Mrinal feels that these qualifications provided him with the skills needed to succeed in today's competitive job market and that the Trimo Research Award will definitely help his CV to stand out to potential employers.

Big wins for Big Pitch finalists
Students toast success after their business ideas catch the eye of judges
Three teams from Anglia Ruskin University, two of them from the Lord Ashcroft International Business School, won £10,000 each after impressing the judges during the final of the Big Pitch competition.
LAIBS students and team leaders Tom Barton and Kanayo Ogwu each successfully pitched their business ideas to a panel after more than 40 initial entries were narrowed down to a shortlist of 7 for the grand final in Cambridge in May 2011.
In addition to their £10,000 start-up funding, they will also receive 12 months free office space at Anglia Ruskin's business incubator unit; 12 months free business banking with Barclays; legal advice and support from Eversheds; accountancy services and advice from Peters Elworthy & Morre (PEM); and creative and branding support from One.
The Big Pitch competition, which was open to all current undergraduate and postgraduate students at Anglia Ruskin University, was run by LAIBS Senior Lecturer Ben Mumby-Croft from the university's Centre for Enterprise Development and Research (CEDAR) in partnership with Anglia Ruskin's Research, Development and Commercial Services (RDCS).
Kanayo Ogwu
MA in International Business
This is so exciting because it has always been my dream to start my own business. I'll cherish this opportunity and I'll do my best to make sure that I don't let down the judges, organisers, and sponsors of this fantastic award.
Tom Barton
BA (Hons) in Enterprise and Entrepreneurial Management
The whole process during the final - especially making the presentation to the judges - was nerve wracking, but it was a great result for us. I think our product is quite bold and 'out there' and that probably appealed to the judges. We've been dreaming big, possibly too big at times, and we wanted to come up with an idea that can help a huge amount of people.
Ben Mumby-Croft
Senior Lecturer at LAIBS
Entrepreneurship is all about creating the right frame of mind; it's not a job title. The Big Pitch has been all about getting people to have a go, take ideas on board and not get downhearted if it doesn't immediately work out. It's very easy to knock ideas but we have to support young people and help them to take their ideas to the next stage, and those taking part in this year's competition have not only been trailblazers but also wonderful ambassadors for Anglia Ruskin.
