Science Rocks with Simon Mayo

Thursday 14th March 2013, 10-11am, Book signing 11-12pm, Chelmsford Campus

You are invited to join BBC broadcaster Simon Mayo for an action packed event based on his books 'Itch' and 'Itch Rocks'. Itch is an everyday schoolboy but his habit of collecting all the elements in the periodic table gets him in some seriously dangerous situations. When he uncovers some very powerful and highly radioactive elements his only gadgets are the elements in his rucksack. Find out how why he has no eyebrows, why you don't want to get William Morris wallpaper damp and what happens when you release xenon gas in a car in this effervescent event.

Simon Mayo is best known for his BBC Radio 2 Drive Time show. He began writing three years ago, when he decided to create something for his son Joe, an avid reader and science nut. Having spent ten years interviewing scientists for his Radio 5 Live show he had plenty of ideas, and was soon consumed by Itch and his story, waking up in the middle of the night to write. Simon has worked on BBC radio since 1981 and runs a Book Club on his Radio 2 show. He is also a co-presenter of 'Kermode and Mayo's Film Review' on BBC Radio 5 Live. In 2008, Mayo was recognized as the 'Radio Broadcaster of the Year' at the 34th annual Broadcasting Press Guild Awards and the 'Speech Broadcaster of the Year' at the Sony Radio Academy Awards.

Wednesday 27 February 2013, 4.30pm, Peterborough Campus, Room: GUI 006

The Faculty of Health, Social Care & Education invited you to an inspiring evening lecture by Jacinta Kelly, senior Lecturer in Acute Care.

Public images of nursing carry stereotypes that rely on the taken for granted gender category of the nurse as a woman. YouTube videos construct three distinct nursing identity types, namely as a 'skilled knower and doer', 'a sexual plaything' and a 'witless incompetent individual'.

The lecture explored the myths and realities of nurses identity online.

Youth Voice: Day of Active Citizenship

8th November 2012, 10am-4pm, Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford campus

This event was a multi-media and interactive day on active youth citizenship. In our lives, decisions are often made by those in power, and this day explored why those decisions are made and how young people can shape them. It was a chance to get involved with finding solutions to modern challenges such as:

  • How would you respond to a crisis?
  • How would you stop your town being overwhelmed by flooding, fire or a riot?

These are the interactive scenarios we want your help to explore. Four sessions which took place over the day put you in the shoes of the Emergency Services, elected politicians, local people and the media in responding to challenging situations through video, drama and invited speakers.

This event brought together young people from many different types of organisations, ranging from the army, sea and police cadets, first aiders, youth community groups and schools. Everyone will had a different idea of what should be done to solve the problem but together decided how to balance competing views and keep the local population calm.

In the Land of the Free

Injustice In the Land of the Free - film screening - Followed by a discussion with Robert King, former political prisoner.

Tuesday 9 October 2012, 6.30pm (refreshments 6pm), Anglia Ruskin University, East Road, Cambridge CB1 1PT

We presented a screening of the documentary film In the Land of the Free. The film was followed by a discussion with Robert King, the only freed member of the Angola 3. He spent 30 years in Angola Penitentiary for his political activism as a member of the Black Panther party. He was released in 2001 after serving 29 years in solitary confinement for a crime he did not commit.

'In the Land of the Free', narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, examines the story of Herman Wallace, Albert Woodfox and Robert King, who have spent almost a century between them in solitary confinement in a former slave plantation called Angola in Louisiana. Known as the Angola 3, they were targeted in the 70s for their activism against the continued segregation, corruption and abuse in the prison and for being members of the Black Panther party.

Robert continues to fight for justice and freedom for Albert Woodfox and Herman Wallace, who have now spent more than 40 years in solitary confinement. They were convicted of the murder of an Angola prison guard by an all white jury, based on no DNA evidence and on the testimony of a blind eyewitness. The case of the Angola 3 has been cited as a gross miscarriage of justice, and Amnesty International calls for their immediate release from solitary confinement - in of itself a violation of the US Constitution and international human rights treaties. The acclaimed documentary 'In the Land of the Free' and Robert's autobiography 'From the Bottom of the Heap' expose this ongoing miscarriage of justice.

Gender neutral parenting

Gender neutral parenting

Thursday 14 June 2012, 7:30pm, Chelmsford campus

Dr Chrissie Rogers facilitated a talk by Dr Tam Sanger and Jay Stewart co-founder of Gendered Intelligence on Gender neutral parenting.

Is gender neutral parenting experimenting with children's lives or allowing them more freedom to be who they want to be? They also examined the practice of gender neutral parenting, a hotly debated and for some a highly contentious topic.

Dr Tam Sanger works in the Childhood and Youth Research Institute at Anglia Ruskin University and is researching trans people's identities. Her publications include 'Trans People's Partnerships: Towards an Ethics of Intimacy'. Jay Stewart runs the organisation Gendered Intelligence, which was set up to advance knowledge about gender and how it impacts on people's lives.
