Applications
Most large employers will ask you to fill out their company application form before shortlisting for interview. Your responses will be judged against the job and person specification. Although company applications may vary, they generally have sections on:
- education
- employment/work experience
- interests and achievements
- either competency based questions
- or a personal statement, including supporting or additional information sections.
Before you start
- Research the organisation online; Confirm there is a 'cultural fit'.
- Identify skills required in selection criteria.
- Download the form and have a good think about your answers.
- Read any notes on how to complete the form.
Online and paper applications
Most modern recruiters use an online application. You need to make sure:- You list your most recent employment history and education details first unless instructed otherwise.
- Your spelling and grammar are watertight.
- You make use of the 'save and return' facilities.
- You are 100% happy before you hit submit!
- Practice on photocopies to check if handwritten paragraphs fit into the boxes.
- Make sure your spelling and grammar are watertight, particularly without the help of a spell check!
- Use black pen.
- Write legibly!
Personal statement, including supporting or additional information section
This is your opportunity to sell yourself and your skills.- Why do you want the job?
- Why this area of work?
- Write about skills needed in the job (essential/desirable) in the job and person specification.
- Always use examples from your work, academic or life experience.
- Make no assumptions that a placement or part-time job speaks for itself.
- Express commitment and enthusiasm.
Competency based questions
These questions check that you have the skills and experience to be able to do the job. Here are some example questions:- Describe a recent time when you have worked with others to achieve a challenging goal. What were you aiming to achieve? What was your role in the team and what actions did you undertake?
- Describe a recent situation when you have identified and met the needs of a customer. How important was it and what did you do to ensure that their real needs were met?
- Please describe a situation where you have had to be proactive in order to solve a complex problem. What key steps did you take to solve it and what was the outcome?
