About us

Anglia Singers

A brief history

The Anglia Singers was formed for a very specific purpose - to sing at a Christmas Carol Service on the Chelmsford site of what is now Anglia Ruskin University. That was in 1992, and for many years the University had not held such an event. The subsequent service, held at the Central Baptist Church, Victoria Road South, was recorded by Essex Radio plc, who also recorded similar services in subsequent years when the Anglia Singers were joined by the Salvation Army Chelmsford Citadel Band.

From that informal beginning when the Singers comprised many staff and students, the choir was placed on a more formal basis, and grew in size.

Our current work

The Singers continue to be ambassadors for the University by taking its name to the many communities it serves. The Singers meet regularly during term times in the Sawyers Building at the Rivermead campus, Chelmsford. The choir gives a number of concerts each year, with special emphasis on its Passiontide concerts and the outreach work that the Singers undertake with concerts in the Community. This involves performances in venues such as churches and special emphasis is placed upon involving young musicians with solo or ensemble spots.

Supporting local charities

Hundreds of pounds have been raised for charities in recent years. Locations have included Braintree, Canvey Island, Great Bardfield, Hatfield Peverel, and Ingatestone.
