Vision & Hearing Sciences

Eye test
The Department of Vision and Hearing Sciences prides itself on producing highly qualified graduates, whose knowledge and experience meet the current needs of the industry. Our courses are highly valued by industry and a number are recognised by professional bodies including the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) and General Optical Council (GOC).

Our Department has very strong links with Industry, and our courses are written in liaison with colleagues from local and national companies to ensure that our graduates have the relevant knowledge and experience to succeed in their career aspirations. We also use these links to connect our students with local employers on a regular basis through work experience opportunities. We also offer a year-long evening presentation programme by optical companies and organisations.

Our students are provided with the following skills and experience throughout their time with us, in order to prepare them for employment:
  • Independent working;
  • reflection on their own and other's performance;
  • originality in tackling and solving problems;
  • critical appraisal techniques;
  • an understanding of how organisations work;
  • effective decision making skills
  • team and group working
  • professional behavior in the workplace

Our University Eye Clinic allows our students to gain essential practical experience with real patients, in a work-based setting.
