Psychology

Psychology department
The Department of Psychology prides itself on producing highly skilled graduates, whose knowledge and experience are valuable in a variety of work environments. The combination of research training, advanced understanding of human behaviour, academic debate and analysis, and 'people skills' mean that graduates are attractive to employers in a range of industries and public services. Our single subject undergraduate degrees are also accredited by our professional body, The British Psychological Society. This means that they are the first step for students who wish to have a career as a professional psychologist.

Our students are provided with the following skills and experience throughout their time with us, in order to prepare them for employment:
  • independent working;
  • reflection on their performance;
  • originality in tackling and solving problems;
  • critical appraisal techniques;
  • an understanding of how organisations work and professional practice;
  • an understanding of human behaviour and diversity;
  • expertise in testing and assessment;
  • written and oral communication skills;
  • research and analysis skills;
  • effective decision making skills;
  • team and group working;
  • professional behavior in the workplace.

In addition to the skills acquired as part of their curriculum, our students have a selection of additional opportunities open to them, designed to support their career development and enhance their CVs. These include
  • undergraduate student placements during the summer vacation, working with an established researcher;
  • workshops on specific research and laboratory skills;

  • careers talks by professional psychologists and businesses.
