Computing & Technology

Mike Cunliffe Jones

Following my studies at Anglia Ruskin University, the first position I applied for was at a global organisation that manages Cisco IP Phones and additional unified communications for corporate and enterprise level companies.

While my studies did not directly involve such systems my knowledge gained through the networking courses at Anglia enabled me to impress my new colleagues and gain the position over 500 others that applied.

Following the in-house experience and training that has built on my existing networking knowledge from Anglia, I now find myself remotely accessing several client systems each day supporting everything from single handsets to servers that control thousands of client phones.

Recently I was tasked with assisting a client in fixing a piece of software that displays collected call information on a VDU. While this was the first time I had used this software I was able to adjust the SQL queries to resolve the issue, A skill that I learned in my first year of study at Anglia. In situations like this I realise the background knowledge that I have gained from ARU has been invaluable in providing a solid base on which to build my professional career in computing.

The Department of the Computing and Technology prides itself on producing highly qualified graduates, whose knowledge and experience meet the current needs of the industry. Our courses are highly valued by industry and a number are accredited by professional bodies including The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Joint Audio Media Education Support (JAMES).

Our Department has very strong links with Industry, and our courses are written in liaison with colleagues from local and national companies to ensure that our graduates have the relevant knowledge and experience to succeed in their career aspirations. We also use these links to connect our students with local employers on a regular basis. Guest lecturers and visitors from industry regularly attend modules to share relevant knowledge and expertise. We also have strong links with the local branches of the British Computer Society and Institute of Engineering and Technology which not only includes hosting their meetings but gives staff and students the opportunity to network with local professionals and employers to ensure we optimise the skills and knowledge developed by students to enhance their employment prospects in the local area.

Our students are provided with the following skills and experience throughout their time with us, in order to prepare them for employment:
  • Independent working;
  • reflection on their own and other's performance;
  • originality in tackling and solving problems;
