Engineering and the Built Environment

built environment student
The Department of Engineering and the Built Environment prides itself on producing highly qualified graduates, who's knowledge and experience meet the current needs of the industry. Our courses are highly valued by the built environment sector, and the vast majority of our undergraduate and postgraduate courses are accredited by professional bodies including; The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), and Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

Our Department has very strong links with Industry, and many of our academics are still in practice with high-level experience at director, partner or senior management level. We use these links to connect our students with local employers on a regular basis through employers coming into lectures, and also offering our students opportunities to visit the workplace. We host an Employer's Fair where students are able to talk directly with employers about work experience, placement opportunities and employment after graduation.

Many of our undergraduate courses allow students to gain experience of the workplace through a placement opportunity.

Our students are provided with the following skills and experience throughout their time with us, in order to prepare them for employment:
  • Independent working;
  • preparation of documentation imitating the work environment;
  • workplace visits;
  • reflection on their own and other's performance;
  • originality in tackling and solving problems;
  • critical appraisal techniques;
  • an understanding of how organisations work;
  • effective decision making skills
  • team and group working
  • professional behavior in the workplace
