Fiona Henderson

Towards the end of my second year as a Criminology student, I took up an opportunity to apply for acceptance onto a collaborative work-experience placement with the Central Intelligence Bureau at Cambridgeshire Constabulary- a scheme that had been developed by one of my lecturers. By the end of that summer, I had secured a period of experience at police headquarters in Huntingdon.

This opportunity not only provided me with invaluable experience, but the work I produced was of operational value to the constabulary. I was supported by a team of inspiring individuals all committed to tackling crime and the consequences of crime in Cambridgeshire and observed the dynamic, challenging nature of intelligence work. The experience itself and the feedback I received will hopefully strengthen my employability on completion of my degree.

More unexpectedly, however, was their offer of part-time employment in the CIB which I have just begun. This has proven to me that embracing the opportunity at its early stage could not have been more beneficial and, in that sense, that the lecturers within the Criminology department are committed to developing students' employability.
