Work Placements
One particularly effective and successful example of employability skills development in action is the work placement year in which a student spends 48 weeks in the workplace making an active contribution to a business. This 'sandwich year' is taken after two years of university study with the student returning to university after the placement to complete their academic studies.
Nick Stephenson, studying for BA (Hons) Business Studies, was selected by Central Essex Community Services to start an industrial placement with them in September 2011.
“I have really enjoyed my time on my placement at CECS. It has been a great opportunity and I am delighted that I took it. I have learnt a lot and I feel much better placed for my final year of my degree. Before I went on the placement I knew lots of theories and I have now been given the opportunity to apply them to the real world, I can then use this real world application to benefit my studies in my final year. My placement has given me ideas for what I want to go into following my degree, it gave me valuable practice with interviews and will always look good on my CV.

Testimonial from Cofunds
"Cofunds has been working with the Lord Ashcroft International Business School to source and recruit a number of graduates for positions and summer work placements this year. So far, two graduates have commenced employment: one in our Sales Team and one in Human Resources and both are proving to be an asset to the business. Cofunds hopes very much to recruit more high quality graduates from the Business School in the future."Sophie Rose, Learning and Development

Employability Tips from Employers
Nicholas Bacon, HR Assistant, Marel UK (LAIBS Alumni)
“Currently working in the field of HR, there are certain expectations of new graduates to come with a 'soft skills' set; this includes being to work well in teams, to be able to nurture and lead people and communicate effectively to others, not only on a personal level but using the best of information and communication technology.
With the ever-changing business environment, today's graduates need to stay optimistic and ride the economic storm. I advise you to get involved with Anglia Ruskin events and socieities, utilise all the support given by lecturers, course councillors and student representatives because employers will always look favourably on graduates who can demonstrate full engagement with university life.
Another top tip is to make sure that your CV is accurate and as relevant as possible. Your CV should describe your skills sets, work experience and personality, so make it as accurate and as professional as possible to get through the door of organisations for interview. It is very useful to demonstrate that you have dedicated some time to charity or volunteering work whilst at university too.
You will be part of the next generation of talent in the workforce. Grab every opportunity you will be offered at the Lord Ashcroft International Business School to develop yourself and remember.... it does not matter where you have come from, it is about the journey. Set yourself career goals and use your degree to achieve these.
My advice to any graduate looking for employment, look early, look broadly as within big organisations opportunities are continuous, and always be thoroughly prepared for interview.
